House on Haunted Hill (1959)

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

Country:  USA

Director:  William Castle

Main Stars:  Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Carolyn Craig

Storyline:  A millionaire offers ten thousand dollars to 5 people to stay locked in a haunted house for one night as he and his wife have rented it.

Review (Spoils):  Millionaire Fredrick Loren (Vincent Price ) and his 4th wife Annabelle (Carol Ohmart ) have rented the haunted house on the hill and have offered 10,000 to each person that survives the night. As the night prolongs the place gets creepier and the people suspect ghosts or the macabre Fredrick himself.  The film is done beautifully as the house is mostly bare and massive. The stars of the film of the film are Vincent Price and Carol Ohmart as their relationship is comical and at times very dark. Which explains why she is trying to murder the millionaire husband with her lover? The third star of the film is the young lady named Nora (Carolyn Craig) she plays the innocent co-worker of the millionaire and also gives her lungs the work over as a scream queen.

The film hangs like a murder mystery but at the same time it has classic scenes such as the acid pool in the basement, the old lady in the shadows, head in the suitcase and of course the classic  floating skeleton.

Rating:  This is Vincent Price at his best, full of mystery, macabre and slick in words. He steals the show and plays the words out beautifully in its own gothic way. This is classic horror at its best. Grab the beers and sit down and enjoy a classic as it comes for a black and white horror film.

7/10 Beers!
