Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness (1992)
Director: Sam Raimi
Main Stars: Bruce Campbell, Embeth Davidtz, Marcus Gilbert
Storyline: Ash gets transported to 1300 A.D., where he has to battle the demons to retrieve the Necronomicon.
Review (Spoils): Ash (Bruce Campbell) gets time-warped to another world to a medieval castle that is over run by demon undead called Deadites. He goes on the quest to retrieve the Nerconomicon so that he can utterly destroy and stop the evil that came from the cabin in the forest from the first film. During the closing of the ritual Ash screws up the words (very funny moment) and releases an army of skeletons on the world lead by a leader Deadite. This leads to love with a cute counterpart named Sheila (Embeth Davidtz) till she becomes possessed and he must save her too. A war begins between Ash and his army against the leader Deadite and the demon undead.
So the series takes a humour twist more than scares with the third of the series. Take your little horror self and enjoy one hell of a funny film. The cult following of this film is huge and to me normally this would be a “oh my god what did they do to this series” but it really works. Ash is a huge icon of horror and this is really why. We have great effects, a tad of gore in the battles, possessions and the one liners in this film as totally classic. How can you beat lines like “But what of all those sweet words you spoke in private?” “Oh that’s just what we call pillow talk, baby, that’s all.” “Gimme some sugar, baby”, “Honey, you got reeeal ugly”! “Good. Bad. I’m the guy with the gun”. This film is filled with them.
Rating: The horror part of me gets sad with this film but it is just a classic on its own. The film is funny and a cult classic. I do wish the gore and cheezie effects of the first film came back but Ash holds the film firm. The Evil Dead series or trilogy is something all fans of film need to check this out and for many centuries we have been screaming for a fourth but it will probably never happen.
