Storyline: A mechanical beetle like device provides the owner the access to eternal life, leading to murder to own it.
Review (Spoils): in 1535 a man builds a mechanical golden beetle looking device that allows access to eternal life to the owner. This item makes its way to an antique dealer’s shop where an older man named Gris buys it. What Gris does not know is that a sick older man by the name of Mr. De La Guardia is on a deadly hunt for the device and he just bought it in the nick of time. This leads to De La Guardia’s men and his nephew on a deadly manhunt for the device.
This film was a surprise for me as I never heard of it till putting it in the DVD player. The movie was awesome and took me for a ride. The film moves at the right pace and the make-up and effects are extremely well done. The mechanical bug is different and should be placed right up there with Hellraiser’s puzzle box for being a staple for horror. I was worried when I noticed Ron Perlman was in the cast but overall they all did a great job and even the humour bits were well balanced. Oh did I mention the blood in this film?
Rating: This film is different and Guillermo Del Toro created something that just flows. It is a bit of a Sci-fi meets horror but it a great film. Especially for the 90s when there was a lot of horror crap! So grab a case of beer (my fountain of eternal youth) and drink up to the crazy golden beetle that latches and devours!
