Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932)
Director: Robert Florey
Stars: Bela Lugosi, Sidney Fox, Leon Ames
Storyline: Dr. Mirakle kidnaps women and injects them with ape blood to prove evolution.
Review: Dr. Mirakle (Bela Lugosi) is trying so hard to prove evolution and the connection of man and ape. He starts to kidnap young women as the city thinks he is mad and a pagan. He uses his ape to kidnap the young beautiful Camille (Sidney Fox) and this starts an investigation. All points to the mad doctor and he tries to inject her with the formal before being found but in the end it leads to a roof top chase with the ape carrying the maiden and police having a shoot out, as the mad doctor dies at the hands of the ape.
This movie is like Frankenstein meets King Kong. The villains are well played the lead woman is a damsel in distress. The roof top scene is a classic for me when it comes to b/w horror and it is memorable.
Rating: This is a classic horror film; it is driven with character build and plot. We have a classic ape and classic Bela Lugosi.
