The Strangers (2008)
Director: Bryan Bertino
Stars: Scott Speedman, Liv Tyler, Gemma Ward
Storyline: A young couple are terrorized in an isolated vacation home.
Review: A young couple head to an out of town wedding and after the reception they stay at an isolated vacation home. Not long they receive knocks on the door and a group of three masked strangers invade the home and terrorize them.
This is a very basic storyline and not really out of range of the type of horror of this generation but the movie is dark and mysterious which does bring fright and intenseness to it. Bryan Bertino does a brilliant job slow pacing the terror and making the masked assailants move quickly so that the scary jumpy parts come right at you. This leads to the more terror to the young couple and keeps the audience in suspense. This film does not rely on gore and blood but instead it makes the audience fear on what they don’t see. This is what makes the movie work.
But the best part of the film is you will never know why the killers are doing this and who the hell they are? This is the gem of the whole film and god I hope they do not a series out of this and ruin that. They will always be known as Pin Up, the Man in the Mask and Dollface.
Rating: This is a classic horror film for its time. We have suspense without the gore and blood that follows most horror films of this era. We have no little girl ghosts, redneck cannibals or stupid remakes from directors that have no originality. Checkout this film, plus it has Liv Tyler.
