Poltergeist 2 (1986)
Director: Brian Gibson
Main Stars: JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Heather O’Rourke, Oliver Robins, Zelda Rubinstein, Will Sampson, Julian Beck
Storyline: The Beast is back and still wants Carol Anne, this time in the face of a fake prophet.
Review (Spoils): The Freelings are slowly trying to get over their family trauma from the first film. They move into Diane’s (JoBeth Williams) mothers place to find peace. But the evil Beast returns in a ghostly apparition known as Reverend Kane (Julian Beck). All he wants is Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) and nothing will stop him. Through all this psychic Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein) is back with an American Indian shaman named Taylor (Will Sampson) to help.
Reverend Kane tries the television again to get Carol Anne but the family have removed all items of such communication (makes sense), tries a toy phone and then finally confronts the family. In this Taylor shows Steve (Craig T. Nelson) the power of smoke to battle the Beast. We learn the past of the Beast as it is Reverend Kane who at one time claimed “End of the World” and killed his people underground where the houses were built.
This film is not even close to the original. The film is not horrible but it is cheesy when it comes to the spirit of smoke, the worm, and the spiritual lance, spirit of the grandmother and the return of Tangina. The film is interesting enough but it so sucked into what was bad about the horror films of the 80s it’s hard to get past that.
Rating: Well it was not a great as the first film but it was watchable and sure in a hell better then the next one! They should have just left the series at one, hence not making it a series at all.
