May the Devil Take You (Sebelum Iblis Menjemput) (2018)

Country:  Indonesian

Director:  Timo Tjahjanto

Main Stars:  Chelsa Islan, Pevita Pearce, Ray Sahetapy, Karina Suwandhi, Hadijah Shahab

Storyline:  A father goes into a coma and his daughter and step sister go back to the old house to find clues but what they find is a hidden evil.

Review (Spoils): This film kicks right off right from the start with an older man with a woman placing some revenge deal using the dark craft. This leads to lots of blood and demon fun and places him in a coma. As his daughter goes to visit him the evil continues with even more blood and screaming. The film goes from there as the daughter looks for help for her father and travels back to the old villa of his find out why he is in the condition that he is. Then the film starts to build on family conflict as it’s a split family and not everyone loves the father. As the daughter and her step sister try to solve the mystery and survive the horrors of the parent’s past.

The movies give us people conflict, some nasty dark blood splashes, some creepy demon possessions, nasty teeth and some typical scares which have been done with horror films from the east. The acting is okay in the film but some of the characters do struggle as the storyline has some typical bad decisions choices when trying to survive. (see the basement scene when mom disappears). The situation between the two sisters can drag a bit but it does spin around once the possessions kick in again.

Rating:  Picture Evil Dead but minus the cabin and placed in an old villa with subtitles. This is not a bad thing as the original Evil Dead is a classic! The film does have its flaws but overall it was much better than I thought it would be. Than again it could be the translation is lost I am not sure.

Let’s just say the special effects are not bad and it is worth checking out and one of the female leads is cute (possessed or not)

6/10 Beers!
