Alien VS Predator (2004)

Alien VS Predator (2004)

Country:  USA

Director:  Paul W.S. Anderson

Main Stars:  Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henriksen, Raoul Bova

Storyline:  During a archaeological expedition in Antarctica uncovered a frozen terror which is long time battle between two species.

Review (Spoils): Archaeologists find a frozen pyramid in the Antarctica which once it is uncovered all hell breaks loose. They discover aliens which start to hunt down and kill of the team in the frozen land. But from outer space comes another alien race which are predators that hunt for skull trophies for their collection and they have the other aliens on their list.

This winter wonderland of terror is a lot of fun, but it is lacking on the blood and gore like the other series have given us. But the story line works and some of the special effects of the film are done very well and are beautiful. I personally do not understand all the hate for this film. This film works and fits the Alien series totally fine. Sure, some of the character dialogue can be a little painful but fuck its aliens! We get also more insight on the predator species and the collecting of skulls was a pretty cool idea. The tracking and hunting scenes are done well but the aliens will always be my favorite out of the two.

Rating:  There was a ton of hype for this film and maybe that is what destroyed the reviews from others for this film. I personally enjoyed it and have seen it a few times. It fits well in the series even though it could have used more blood and gore, but the queen is beautiful and hell we it has Lance!

Alien 4: Resurrection (1997)

Alien 4: Resurrection (1997)

Country:  USA

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet

Main Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder, Dominique Pinon

Storyline: Ellen Ripley is revived and is now part human and alien as she continues her war against the beasts.

Review (Spoils):  200 years after the last film, we resurrect Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) with the process of cloning but during the process the DNA get’s mixed up with the alien DNA from the Queen. Ripley becomes an offshoot of an alien mutant and the scientist start to breed aliens. The Xeno-morphs start to roam the ship and start taking over is which just happens to be on its way to Earth. So Ripley and her new team need to once again put a stop to the alien horde and their Queen.

This film brought a new spin to the Ripley character and brought us a even more powerful alien as new breed is born. The first three films of the series actually closed the deal on the original story and this one just seems to be placed out there to cash on the name. The film does have action and aliens just keep you on track but the characters themselves seem cardboardish. I was even disappointed with the character Winona Ryder played (which normally I enjoy her acting). The film scream more sci-fi then actual horror more then ever.

Rating: This film is just a drag on the very last part of a cigarette when it comes to the Aliens series. The film is not horrible but when you place it with the first three it can not compare. But I love Sigourney Weaver so I will not mark this film too hard. But it seemed to me that this film became to sci-fi for me as being a horror fan if that makes any sense.

Prometheus (2012)

Prometheus (2012)

Country:  USA

Director: Ridley Scott

Main Stars: Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce

Storyline:  We get the history of the beginning of the Alien’s series with the Maker of man

MV5BMTY3NzIyNTA2NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzE2NjI4Nw@@__V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_Review (Spoils): We go into the future with a pre-storyline of the Aliens series with a film named after the great ship that started this adventure. We have a group of doctors, explorers and robots (that look human) going into another planet area looking for the answer on the creation of mankind. In this we learn about a race known as the Engineers. We learn that different people within the mission have different reasons for going. The plot thickens and we learn that there was a battle between the Engineers and an alien race but why did the creators hate humans if they created them?

To be honest the first hour can be a bit long and dry and a tad confusing as your trying to guess how this ties into the Aliens series. But after the first hour the sci-fi tames down and the horror starts to cut in with some space goo, alien hatchlings, robot heads flying, some blood and a very neat surgery scene. The special effects are actually done very well and the movie does keep you entertained and it kind of makes sense all in the end. We have the lovely Noomi Rapace playing in the lead and she was fantastic and her cast around her did an amazing job. The acting was perfect. And the scenery of the ship and the ideas of the future were very cool and not over the top.

Rating: I was not sure about this film as I started it as I’m a huge sci-fi fan but dug the first couple of Aliens films so this intrigued me.  The first half-hour to a hour I was regretting the film but once I started to make connections of the Aliens films to this one I could not stop watching. Great action, some awesome effects and stay glued till the very end as it has a nice special treat for alien fans.

Alien 3 (1992)

Alien 3 (1992)

Country: USA

Director: David Fincher

Main Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Paul McGann, Lance Henriksen, Danny Webb

Storyline: Ripley escapes the aliens only to have her escape pod crash on a prison planet which the aliens follow her too.

MV5BMTQzMTg3NTM2Ml5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTkzMTk3OA@@__V1_SX214_AL_Review (Spoils): Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) escapes the aliens and has she ship crash onto a remote ore refinery. When she waiting for help she finds out an alien caused her ship to crash. We end up with a pile of characters that you cannot keep up and the alien start to track her down yet again and this time he wants to propagate itself on the planet. For some reason this films storyline felt rehashed of the first one and the alien to me is just not a threatening.

This film is done very dark which to me works to set the mood, but there is just too much going on in this film and the alien does not seem to be the same creature which we all grew up to love. Not sure what David Fincher was trying to do here. The Ripley character is even lacking in this one, she is not the strong heroine as in the past films but instead this depressing “Debbie downer” we are all fucked type person. This film kills the series and it’s too bad as they could have did more with it ..it’s a real shame.

Rating: This movie lacks all the suspense that we loved about the first two and the characters are unlikable so you really don’t care if the alien kills them or not. Sure there is two classic scenes (not mentioning them to ruin it) but overall this film could have been left on the table on paper.

Aliens (1986)

Aliens (1986)

Country: USA

Director:  James Cameron

Main Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Carrie Henn, Lance Henriksen, Jenette Goldstein, Bill Paxton

Storyline: The planet in which the aliens from the first film start a colony

MV5BMTYzNzU5MzQ4OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDcxNDg3OA@@__V1_SY317_CR12,0,214,317_Review (Spoils): Fifty seven years after the first film Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) survives it by drifting across the galaxy in a cryogenic stasis. She tells the group about the great battle of aliens on the planet LV-426 but nobody believes her. So they send a troop of space marines in to investigate the area with Ripley leading the way.

We have some of the greatest effects and action when it comes to space and horror right here. We have some intense scares and some crazy action when the battle begins between the marines and the aliens. We learn a lot more about the aliens themselves and even get to see the great queen in all her glory. We got lots of gore, slime and gun shooting.

Sigourney Weaver steals the show here again in this series but at the same time the acting is very well done all around. There is very little wrong with this film.

Rating:  What we have here is one of the best horror sci-fi movies around. This might even be better than The Thing for me but if not it is damn close. Grab the pints and get ready for a damn good film with gripping special effects. If you have not seen this film well it’s your loss.

Review (Spoils):  This where the whole alien series starts. Is it really a horror film to me yes it is there is sometimes a thin line between horror and sci-fi and even sometimes they cross together and this is one of those films. The acting in the film is awesome and the actual effects are cool and none of that lame computerized CGI crap. This is the way horror is supposed to be!

Ripely (Sigourney Weaver) rules the film with her grace and even brings the silence to the gripping parts of the film. We have classic scenes such as the face detachment and the small alien ripping through the chest.  The adult alien itself is a gripping terror of its own and the beast rules when it comes to outer space terror. One of the most iconic creatures of the 70s when it comes to horror and the most iconic when it comes to horror in space!  Thank you Ridley Scott for creating a masterpiece.

Rating:  “In space, no one can hear you scream”. Classic tag line just like this film holds when it comes to terror in the stars. Directors can learn from this film as there is not much to hold as a flaw in this one. If you have not seen this film… get out there and grab it! The best of the series and the first of the series!
