From Beyond (1986)

From Beyond (1986)

Country: USA

Director:  Stuart Gordon

Main Stars:  Jeffery Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ted Sorel, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, Bunny Summers

Storyline:  A bunch of scientists built a Resonator that allows whoever near by it see beyond normal perceptible reality. Once it is open terrible life forms appear to attack mankind.

Review (Spoils): Crawford Tillinghast (Jeffery Combs) and Edward Pretorius (Ted Sorel) worked together on a Resonator and once it started to finally work all hell broke loose. Flying eels from another dimension started to attack and before you knew it Pretorius was killed but was, he? Crawford got taken away for being nuts and Dr. Katherine Mc Michaels (Barbara Crampton) decides to listen to him and have him re-done exactly what he did. This opens the dimension yet again and it also shows what has happened to Pretorius.

The plot for this film is very simple and it should be as the main part of the film for the audience is the crazy special effects. This film is loaded with them so much that I cannot even begin to start to list the scenes. When Stuart Gordon, Jeffery Combs and Barbara Crampton are together you do know that you do not have to doubt the film period. If you have no idea what I am talking about then you better redo your watching list of what is really horror. The characters yes is basic and not overly written in development, but you have Combs playing the strange yet lost scientist and Crampton with her style coming to the rescue or at least trying too. The film screams classic Stuart Gordon with tons of over top special effects and goo coming from all different things and directions.

This film gives lots of slime goo, heads splitting, lots of melting and stretching skin, flying eels, classic 80s electricity effects (you know what I mean), Barbara Crampton topless, weird head antenna that kill, Barbara Crampton in stockings (yummy), melted and torn apart bodies, not much blood but lots and lots of strange lamprey creatures and the many forms of Edward Pretorius. So much special effects I cannot get into the all details.

Rating:  Wanna watch a classic special effects film that is over the top and fun? Then this is the one for you. Stuart Gordon held back nothing when it comes to both his main characters of Jeffery Combs and Barbara Crampton in this film. This gold when it comes to classic 80s horror films of weirdness and it was just wanted, I needed and love.

Death House (2017)

Death House (2017)

Country:  USA

Director:  B. Harrison Smith

Main Stars:  Bill Mosely, Tony Todd, Nicole Cinaglia, Adrienne Barbeau, Kane Holder, Debbie Rochon, Gunnar Hansen, Dee Wallace, Lindsay Hartley, Barbara Crampton, Camille Keaton, Cortney Palm, Sid Haig, Brinke Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Felissa Rose, Lauren Compton, Beverly Randolph, Sean Whalen, Cody Longo. Lloyd Kaufman

Storyline:  A secret prison has a power outage and all Hell breaks loose when two agents are trapped.

Review (Spoils): Not sure what everyone was thinking with this film, but it became a simple over the top gore mess. The storyline is not very detailed, and it is actually kind of jumbled. We have two agents Condy Longo and Cortney Palm trapped in a prison where a large collection of doctors (including Dee Wallace’s bad hair) has the prisoners trapped with victims that satisfy their needs. Kane Hodder is one of the main prisons badasses and as the power goes out, he starts to lead a front of prisoners.

The film does delivery the bloody goods with slashing, cutting, gun shots, intestines, some weird living zombies gore scene, cheap gas and Satan fire scene and lots of gore. The film is all over the place but we do also get a few glances of Courtney Palm topless but nothing sexy from Debbie Rochon, Felissa Rose, Lindsay Hartley or Laura Compton. (such a missed chance)

Rating:  This is a knocking dead all star cast of horror! There are more names in this film then I can even name when it comes to paying homage to horror. We have the classic villains like Bill Mosely, Tony Todd, Gunnar Hansen, Kane Holder and Sean Whalen to name a few. Over the top gore hound Lloyd Kaufman. And the horror B Queens themselves like Adrienne Barbeau, Debbie Rochon, Dee Wallace, Barbara Crampton, Camille Keaton, Brinke Stevens, Felissa Rose and Lauren Compton just to name a few! But unfortunately it could not save the film from a written mess, it just tried too hard and the finale was kind of boring and lame to the end Hansen that way.  The only thing that made the ending okay was the homage to Gunnar Hansen which was a nice little added touch which made me sad.

You’re Next (2011)

You’re Next (2011)

Country:  USA

Director: Adam Wingard

Main Stars: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, AJ Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Margarget Laney, Amy Seimetz, Ti West, Barbara Crampton

Storyline:  During a families wedding anniversary party a group of men in masks start to terrorize the family.

mv5bmtqwodaxmte1nf5bml5banbnxkftztcwntq0mjy3oq__v1_ux182_cr00182268_al_Review (Spoils):  A man and his wife have invited their siblings and their loved ones to come to an old mansion that help celebrate their wedding anniversary. What everyone does not know is the neighbors next door have already been slaughtered by someone in a mask that leaves messages in blood saying You’re Next. Through this we gain some character development, some conflict between the sons, some background on the family and money and of course a few killers roaming around in animal masks that are not afraid by any means on getting their hands bloody.

We have a topless scene in the first 2 min, lots of red blood, nasty axes, crossbows, glass cuts, some serious throat cuts, nails in the foot, some head smashes and a actual cool plot and storyline. We have the beautiful Sharni Vinson as our scream queen and the actual people used in this film are normal not you type Hollywood crap setup.

Rating: This film was sooo much fun! It was a total bloody mess and I was entertained actual through the whole damn thing. It’s been awhile since I enjoyed a horror film this much and it was over top gory. Think The Strangers meets the goriest thing and this sums this film up!

Chopping Mall (1986)

Chopping Mall (1986)

Country: USA

Director: Jim Wynorski

Main Stars: Kelli Maroney, Tony O’Dell, Russell Todd, Barbara Crampton, Karrie Emerson

Storyline: Teenagers trapped in a high tech shopping mall are being hunted down by security robots.

MV5BODM2NzA3ODY2OV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDU1NjYyMQ@@__V1_SX214_AL_Review (Spoils): A group of crazy teenagers who all work at a local mall decide to throw a party in one of the stores. The mall goes into security locked down while they are having the time of their lives which then the robot security guards then go out and try to get rid of all the intruders. This is all caused by a crazy lightning storm which strikes and causes all the janitor staff to die and caused the robots to go nuts.

We have killer robots, young hormones, some burning teenagers, explosions, lasers, someone falling to their death and some cheesy electrocution. This film screams 80s and some bad acting to boot.

Rating: Man do I ever hate robots in horror films. Don’t get me wrong I love Star Wars but I don’t like them mixed. The film was ok for what it was which was cheesy teenage fun in a mall. Think Dawn of the Dead but with robots and not even nearly as good. The film need more babes and less lasers.

Castle Freak (1995)

Castle Freak (1995)

Country: USA

Director: Stuart Gordon

Stars: Jeffery Combs, Barbara Crampton, Jonathan Fuller, Jessica Dollarhide

Storyline: A blind daughter visits a castle that they inherited. They soon learn they are not alone in the building.

MV5BMTUyMzQ3MjU5MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTI0NTYzNQ@@__V1_SY317_CR7,0,214,317_Review:  A couple (Jeffery Combs, Barbara Crampton) and their blind daughter (Jessica Dollarhide) inherited a castle and when they decide to visit it they are greeted with noises, smashed items and the daughter keeps claiming that she has a visitor at night. Through time staff gets murdered and it all leads to an abused child (Jonathan Fuller) that is left to die in the castle’s basement who is now a savage madman.

The movie flows in a slow pace which is a good thing here as it keeps the gothic and dreary feel.  The acting is top notch for a film of this type and the gore is over the top. The freaks make-up and special effects are very well done and you can see the savage of the beast when he gets hold of the prosecute (nipple biting anyone?).  The real question is the film is, is the Freak a victim himself?

Rating: Over the top gore, lots of sexual tension, pretty decent acting and Stuart Gordon what is there not to like about this film? Of course this not a classic but it is a pretty decent film for direct to video and is a must see for any horror fan.

Review (Spoils):  Herbert West (Jeffery Combs) is a mad scientist who is working on a formula that can bring the dead back to life.  Unfortunately he has not mastered the glowing formula. He rents a room from another student named Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott) and drags him into his madness. In this they re-animate a dead cat, multiple dead people during a testing result, zombie mania, zombie bodies holding talking heads and even moving body parts.  Oh and the dean’s daughter Barbara (Barbara Crampton) is involved as Dan is dating her in secret.

This movie is very entertaining and it is always fun to come back too. The gore is there, the comedy is there and the storyline is a zombie version of Frankenstein. Jeffery Combs is a great actor and becomes a memorable horror character of Herbert West and hats off to him for his skills in this film and thanks to Stuart Gordon for creating such a fun series.

Rating:  If you’re a horror fan and you like a side of comedy with it…this is a must see. I place this film right up there with Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive.  This is zombie fun at its best and this is beginning of the demented mind of Herbert West. Got to love the dead cat scene!!! Bring on the beers for this one and add some green glowing food colouring for more fun!
