Spider Baby (1968)
Director: Jack Hill
Main Stars: Lon Chaney Jr, Carol Ohmart, Quinn K. Redeker, Sid Haig, Beverly Washburn, Jill Banner
Storyline: The Merrye family are a bit strange because of generation of inbreeding which has led the latest bloodline to be mentally regressed. Rich distant relatives and their lawyer arrive to overtake their home but they soon learn that you do not mess with the Merrye family.
Review (Spoils): This movie runs along the lines of the Addams Family but add a bit weirder in there. For what the budget was set too this film is actually entertaining.Lon Chaney Jr plays the caretaker Bruno who is trying to defend and hide the family’s mental issues in which he calls “rotting of the brain”. Next to stealing the show is the strange daughters Elizabeth and Virginia (Beverly Washburn, Jill Banner) who like to play a strange little game called ‘Spider”. This adds to the film and shows to me the real horror of the family characteristics. Sid Haig also does a great job playing the goofy brother Ralph who reminds a lot of the Adam’s Family. The devoted semi title of the film called “The Maddest Story Ever Told” does hold some truth once you’re through this one.
Rating: I really did like this film and I hunted it down as it was getting some great creepy reviews. Yes it not scary but it plays on black humor and creepy atmosphere. The whole “spider” game and idea worked well and will not be forgotten.
