Director: Daniel Mann
Main Stars: Bruce Davison, Sondra Locke, Ernest Borgnine
Storyline: A young man makes friends with rats and uses them for revenge.
Review (Spoils): Willard (Bruce Davison) is a social misfit and is surrounded by his mother’s freaky friends since his father’s death. Even his father’s partner Al Martin (Ernest Borgnine) who everyone hates as the film makes it way through the plot is an asshole. As Willard befriends the cute Joan (Sondra Locke) from work and his mother passes away, he learns that everyone is a pain and cannot be trusted so he has the rats do his dirty work. The rats under the leadership of Ben and Socrates take on the world under the order of Willard we have an entertaining film.
This film screams 70s; we have sexual harassment at work, rats, jumping rats, rats on people’s back, minor blood, some bad editing and the very attractive Sondra Locke.
Rating: This film is much better than Ben by a long shot. Even though it has a made for TV, type feel I felt that the vibe was creepy enough with characters that it kept me entertained. Bruce Davison was great lead and when he snaps you can actual picture the madness in his acting and voice. In addition, we have Sondra Locke before her career took off, being innocent and playful and oh ya the rats were ok.
The Lords of Salem (2013)
Director: Rob Zombie
Stars: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel, Judy Geeson, Meg Foster, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace, Sid Haig
Storyline: A radio DJ gets a box containing a record and the music triggers her madness and opens a coven of witches to her.
Review (spoils): Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie) is a rocker DJ works at a local radio station. She receives a record from a new group called “The Lords” which when she plays it, it does things to her mind. So the radio station promotes the band anyways and what they find out on the bands concert that it is a private hearing and it has not reawakened a coven of witches.
Ok once again Rob Zombie has confused the hell out of me with his typical throwing weird shit at you for no reason. Sure he is good at that and its fun in horror but you need to know when and how to do it. Rob Zombie always over does it and it ruins the film. He has the right idea but he tries too hard. This film holds goats, naked hags, alien fetuses, burning skin, licking bloody babies and weird dream sequence where there are some cardinals stroking cocks. What we have here is a film that lives around Rosemary’s Baby meets Hellraiser. The film is so all over the place that it even takes away from Sheri Moon Zombie hotness (but she needed to lose the dreads and the tattoos).
Rating: Rob Zombie once again had a great idea of a film but yet again stole ideas from classic horror films that influenced him. But this one might actually be one of his better films and hell its better than the remake hell that the rest of Hollywood is offering.
