Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972)

Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972)

Country: UK

Director: Alan Gibson

Main Stars: Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Stephanie Beacham, Caroline Munro, Marsha Hunt

Storyline: It’s 1972 and someone has raised Count Dracula and he hunts down the bloodline of Van Helsing.

Dracula-ad1972_BSXCD8855Review (Spoils): the final battle of 1872 with Count Dracula (Christopher Lee) and Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) has the vampire falling to his death from a piece of wooden wheel through the heart. During this battle the great Van Helsing also dies from his wounds. He gets buried and the some of the vampire ashes and ring are kept in secretive by his apprentice. In 1972 now the Count gets resurrected by a bloodline relative of the apprentice. The Count is raised and he starts to continue his hatred towards the Van Helsings.

What we have here is the sequel to Satanic Rites of Dracula and a nice Hammer Film located in the 70s. We have top notch acting yet again from Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, some sexy 70s babes (what’s a Hammer film without the ladies) and crazy 70s lingo. This film sure is not as great as the past one’s of the series but the Dracula series from Hammer is still going strong with this entry. The opening battle scene alone is a horror classic.
Rating: When it comes the Hammer films the Dracula series is by far the best of them. Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing are great yet again. This might be the weaker of them but trust me this does not make this a bad film. It’s worth to drink too and check out and “Tell us about the blood Johnny?”

Maniac (1980)

Maniac (1980)

Country: USA

Director: William Lustig

Main Stars: Joe Spinell, Caroline Munro, Abigail Clayto, Tom Savini, Kelly Piper, Sharon Mitchell

Storyline: A wicked childhood has leaded a man into killing women and taking their scalps as trophies.

MV5BMTMxMTg0MDAwN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDM2NjA0MQ@@__V1_SY317_CR8,0,214,317_Review (Spoils): Frank Zito (Joe Spinell) is one messed up man. His abusive mother worked the streets but he still kept a close connection to her. After she was killed in a car accident that leads to his mind snap. He keeps hearing his mother and does not want to leave that behind so he starts to walk the streets of New York and murdering women in graphic ways. He scalps them and places them on mannequins in his apartment.  Through all this he meets a young photographer named Anna (Caroline Munro) who befriends him and tries to build a relationship. This draws the line in his mind of his mother and he totally breaks down and loses his mind.

This is one of the most graphic, bloody and gory film for slashers for its time. Frank is one messed up man they build the character greatly and it keeps you interested. The film has some nasty scalping, barb wire throat slits, strangulation, shotgun shots, stabbings and a nasty ending with the mannequins. Bring on the gore and bring on the nasty for this one.

Rating: This film is momma’s boy gone wrong. This film is not for the weak and it is pretty graphic. The storyline and character is build is awesome and the film to me is a classic of the 80’s horror. Frank Zinto is one messed up man and for that we thank William Lustig.
