Fright Night (2011)
Director: Craig Gillespie
Main Stars: Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Toni Collette, David Tennant, Imogen Poots
Storyline: A teenager suspects his next door neighbor is a vampire.
Review (Spoils): Ok remake time. I normally do not review the remake before the original but it’s Fright Night and the original really was not that great. Same storyline as the first one from the 80s with Charlie (Anton Yelchin) is a geek is now in with the in crowd and realizes from hints of disowned follower nerd that students are disappearing in town and it is because a vampire named Jerry (Colin Farrell) is living next door to him. This is film is fun and not fun like the cheesy 80s version but actually entertaining. Colin Farrell does a good job playing the hunky bad ass next door neighbour who does not like people finding out his secret, Anton Yelchin is very entertaining as the geeky Charlie on the hunt to prove to everyone that he is not mad and there are vampires in town. David Tennant stole the show for me as the tv character Peter Vincent which I love the Chris Angel type direction they went instead of the Vincent Price way the original did. The only down fall for me in this film was two things and the sad part they are major things.
The CGI really stunk in this film is certain places. I mean really stunk, I hate when people do blood in CGI just spend the cash on the red liquid. My next bitch fest will be on the actress Imogen Poots I just did not get her character. Really …? You’re not that great and the scene where she is being dragged in a grasp by Jerry at the bar was just lame and even lamer was the “I want sex scene” really? So teenage dumb and just stupid it could have been left out of the damn film. Sorry she is probably a great actress but her character was just weak and she acted like the queen of hotness in which she is not in the film. Sorry you do not pass as the girl next door… nice try.
Rating: Not often but it does happen where the remake out does the original and this is just one example. Don’t get me wrong it does not take much to outdo the original Fright Night so it’s not an amazing horror film but it does get bonus for the Peter Vincent character and the fact that did not do the relationship between Charlie’s mom Toni Collette to Jerry because then it would be a bad Lost Boys rip off. Grab a six of Bud and enjoy!
