Director: David Cronenberg
Main Stars: Marilyn Chambers, Frank Moore, Joe Silver, Susan Roman
Storyline: A woman has plastic surgery and since she craves blood and has been creating a zombie plague across the city.
Review (Spoils): After a freak motorcycle and van accident, which leaves the back passenger of the cycle with some major burns, she is rushed to a plastic surgeon under her will (she is in a coma) for a test experiment. Rose (Marilyn Chambers) wakes up in a scare and learns that she now craves blood. She ends up hurting a patient near her and he cannot remember and lord behold a plague starts to infect the area. Oh, did we mention that she has a start red like new organ growing under her armpit that she uses to draw blood? Human blood is the need as she tries cow’s blood and it just causes some serious blood puke and the victims becomes a rabid type plague on top of that.
This film is all over the place when it comes to the storyline and bizarre. We have strange red penis like organs, a classic porn star as the main actor, foaming mouths, red blood and a zombie like plague that is haunting the streets as Rose keeps her secret. Only in Montreal, can something this weird cut loose?
Only David Cronenberg could create something this bizarre to hit the horror world for its time in the 70s.
Rating: This film is what happens when you mixed horror with a classic 70s porn queen and the classic freak king David Cronenberg. If you are a fan of his movies, you will love this one and get a huge kick out of it all. However, if you like your horror movies very standard you will be sighing through the damn thing. I dug the film and kind of understand the cult following it has, it just needed more classic porn stars in it.
They Came from Within / Shivers (1975)
Director: David Cronenberg
Main Stars: Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowry, Barbara Steele, Susan Petrie
Storyline: An apartment building gets infected by a parasite that turns people into mindless sex fiends.
Review (Spoils): A scientist lives in large apartment complex in Montreal which he murders a young girl, strips her, cuts her open and uses acid to burn out her internal organs then finally slitting his own throat. This all leads to a strange investigation which brings to the truth of experiments using parasites as organ transplants. This parasite escapes and starts to infect resident by resident turning them into sex crazed zombies.
This strange film does bring out the red as we have throat slitting, a nasty opening of a body, lot’s of vomit of blood, strange parasites and the classic bath tub scene with Barbara Steel. This parasite is the cause of zombie like sex orgy and everyone should run in fear. Some of the special effects are actually pretty decent and the storyline itself is touching the symbolism of sexual transmitted diseases. Remember this film is from 1975 so this was before the actual awareness of such disease such as A.I.D.S.
Rating: This is the first if not one of the first films from David Cronenberg. The film follows the pace of his other later films but this one stands out as it is a strange piece of art. The topic is buried in the movie but it is not hard to see what his point was. The movie can move a little slow at times but to be honest the more I think about the film the more it makes sense. I’m personally not a huge fan of David Cronenberg but this one I do get.
Friday the 13th 10
Director: Victor Miller
Main Stars: Kane Hodder, Lexa Doig, Jeff Geddis, Lisa Ryder, David Cronenberg
Storyline: The body of Jason Voorhees in found in the 25th century and is awakened by some overly interested passengers of a spaceship.
Review (Spoils): Yes here it is Jason in space……sigh.
So set in the future when Earth is nothing but a junkyard and nobody can live on it anymore. A small group of adventurers receive two frozen bodies and defrost them. Well one of them is Jason Voorhees the maniac killer from Crystal Lake. Jason then awakens and starts to slaughter the whole crew on the ship. We learn that Jason was frozen because the government had no other way of destroying or stopping the madman. During the battle he gets a cyborg upgrade due to a battle within the medical station of the ship.
This film has some terrible acting but the film delivers the following. We have machete action as usual, impaling, back breaking, throat slits, lots of shooting, head chopping, head punching, cyborg nipples and of course a sex scene. Ending it all with a holographic simulation of Crystal Lake and sending Jason there as a fallen star.
Rating: The acting is horrid; this is pretty much the lowest budget in film for the series as even the film work is amateur. We knew this was bound to happen as almost every other main horror character of the 80s era went to space at some point. One if not the worst of the series right here. Thank god for Freddy VS Jason.
