Death House (2017)

Death House (2017)

Country:  USA

Director:  B. Harrison Smith

Main Stars:  Bill Mosely, Tony Todd, Nicole Cinaglia, Adrienne Barbeau, Kane Holder, Debbie Rochon, Gunnar Hansen, Dee Wallace, Lindsay Hartley, Barbara Crampton, Camille Keaton, Cortney Palm, Sid Haig, Brinke Stevens, Tiffany Shepis, Felissa Rose, Lauren Compton, Beverly Randolph, Sean Whalen, Cody Longo. Lloyd Kaufman

Storyline:  A secret prison has a power outage and all Hell breaks loose when two agents are trapped.

Review (Spoils): Not sure what everyone was thinking with this film, but it became a simple over the top gore mess. The storyline is not very detailed, and it is actually kind of jumbled. We have two agents Condy Longo and Cortney Palm trapped in a prison where a large collection of doctors (including Dee Wallace’s bad hair) has the prisoners trapped with victims that satisfy their needs. Kane Hodder is one of the main prisons badasses and as the power goes out, he starts to lead a front of prisoners.

The film does delivery the bloody goods with slashing, cutting, gun shots, intestines, some weird living zombies gore scene, cheap gas and Satan fire scene and lots of gore. The film is all over the place but we do also get a few glances of Courtney Palm topless but nothing sexy from Debbie Rochon, Felissa Rose, Lindsay Hartley or Laura Compton. (such a missed chance)

Rating:  This is a knocking dead all star cast of horror! There are more names in this film then I can even name when it comes to paying homage to horror. We have the classic villains like Bill Mosely, Tony Todd, Gunnar Hansen, Kane Holder and Sean Whalen to name a few. Over the top gore hound Lloyd Kaufman. And the horror B Queens themselves like Adrienne Barbeau, Debbie Rochon, Dee Wallace, Barbara Crampton, Camille Keaton, Brinke Stevens, Felissa Rose and Lauren Compton just to name a few! But unfortunately it could not save the film from a written mess, it just tried too hard and the finale was kind of boring and lame to the end Hansen that way.  The only thing that made the ending okay was the homage to Gunnar Hansen which was a nice little added touch which made me sad.

Critters (1986)

Critters (1986)

Country: USA

Director: Stephen Herek

Main Stars: Dee Wallace, M.Emmet Walsh, Billy Green Bush, Lin Shaye, Nadine Van der Velde, Scott Grimes

Storyline: A small group of blood thirsty aliens land on some farmland

MV5BMTU5MDUwMDA3OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDY2MjAwMQ@@__V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_AL_Review (Spoils): A small average family that live out in the country get involved in a falling star that land’s in the fields. The family has their normal older sister and younger brother fights which builds the character level up. The family battles these black fuzzy, needle shooting big mouthed aliens with the help of another group of aliens bounty hunters that having glowing heads but are shape changers.

This movie does lack on the gore but there are some nasty bloody bites and needle stabs. The rolling little devils are entertaining enough but with no real background story why they kill. The acting by no means great but it is a low budget horror film so I was not expecting a whole lot.

Rating: This is basically Gremlins minus Phoebe Cates sure we have Nadine Van der Velde but its just not the same. The movie is silly and does have some fun parts but to keep on the series with sequels is just beyond. The film might have been better if they took out all the cheesy bounty hunter alien part.

Review (Spoils):  Donna Trenton (Dee Wallace) is a housewife who gets caught having an affair on her husband. Her husband leaves town to think shit over and she is left alone with her son Tad (Danny Pintauro).  While driving with her son she runs into car problems so she takes it to a car shop to fix the car.  What she did not know is there is a dog there named Cujo who got infected with from a bat.  This leaves the mother and son trapped in the car (which is broken down remember) trapped inside while the mad dog watches. Oh did I mention the owner of the dog has been killed by the dog?

The movie can tense at times but after a while the film does drag as how far can you get with a storyline of a woman and child trapped in a car. You feel bad for the mother as the film goes on as she is a survival game, till the final struggle between mother and dog in the house.

This film does not rely on blood or gore but instead more thriller as the dog does get slowly more and vicious as the disease overtakes him. Dee Wallace does do a great job playing the defending mother of her child over the dog. Danny Pintauro is annoying as always.

Rating:  Another Stephen King classic turned to film. The movie can have its slow parts but when you think killer dog, you think Cujo. It’s not the greatest film but it is a animal horror classic.

The Lords of Salem (2012)

The Lords of Salem (2013)

Country: USA

Storyline: A radio DJ gets a box containing a record and the music triggers her madness and opens a coven of witches to her.

Review (spoils): Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie) is a rocker DJ works at a local radio station. She receives a record from a new group called “The Lords” which when she plays it, it does things to her mind. So the radio station promotes the band anyways and what they find out on the bands concert that it is a private hearing and it has not reawakened a coven of witches.

Ok once again Rob Zombie has confused the hell out of me with his typical throwing weird shit at you for no reason. Sure he is good at that and its fun in horror but you need to know when and how to do it. Rob Zombie always over does it and it ruins the film. He has the right idea but he tries too hard. This film holds goats, naked hags, alien fetuses, burning skin, licking bloody babies and weird dream sequence where there are some cardinals stroking cocks. What we have here is a film that lives around Rosemary’s Baby meets Hellraiser. The film is so all over the place that it even takes away from Sheri Moon Zombie hotness (but she needed to lose the dreads and the tattoos).

Rating: Rob Zombie once again had a great idea of a film but yet again stole ideas from classic horror films that influenced him. But this one might actually be one of his better films and hell its better than the remake hell that the rest of Hollywood is offering.

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

The Hills Have Eyes (1977)

Review (Spoils):  Before there was Wrong Turn there was The Hills Have Eyes which became a cult favourite and classic for horror. Wes Craven takes an American family on a journey in the desert that leads to death, torture and some redneck fun! We have the Carter family which the father is a retired cop and his wife is bit loony. Their children are a mixed bag Lynne (Dee Wallace)is married to a loser with a baby, Bobby (Robert Houston) is too attached to his dogs and has a weird relationship with his sister Brenda (Suze Lanier-Bramlett) who is cute but man her screaming can be massively annoying after a hour. After typical warnings from locals they still head into the off roads and lord behold they wreck the car (which is actually funny….really a map in the face?) and now they are stranded and lunch meat for the rednecks.  The fun part about this film which is different and leads into a Texas Chainsaw Massacre type feel is the rednecks have some character background and are interesting. Lead by an axed faced madman named Jupiter (James Whitworth) and Mamma. Other main characters are the classic bald headed Pluto (Michael Berryman) and the cute but nasty teeth Ruby (Janus Blythe) who just wants to escape the savages and live a normal life. The film leads to some nasty dog bites, burnings, explosions and some good ol’ fashion knives and hatchets.

Rating: Similar feel as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre it does not sit on the gore side really it instead deals with the subject in hand, which a lot of films in this day in age in horror lack. Yes The Hills Have Eyes have some pretty painful parts (Bobby and Lynne’s husband are piss poor characters) but it was unique for it time and Wes Craven opened a lot of door for horror with this film. Plus it has Michael Berryman what’s not to love?

The Howling (1981)

The Howling (1981)

Country: USA

Director: Joe Dante

Main Stars: Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Belinda Balaski, Robert Picardo, Elizabeth Brooks

Storyline: A newswoman is trying to track down a serial killer story and she gets more than she bargains for as she and her boyfriend end up in a colony of werewolves.

Review:  Karen White (Dee Wallace) is trying to track down the greatest serial killer story of her career, the story of Eddie Quist (Robert Picardo). After following trails of smiley face stickers and porn shops she tracks him down and gets attacked and her career and her life was never the same again. Through some mental health her doctor Dr. Waggner recommends her and her boyfriend (Patrick Macnee) take a holiday to his colony, not mentioning it was a werewolf colony!

This movie is one of the first horror movies that I remember watching and I did enjoy this film. The movie has great special effects such as some of the werewolf transformations and decent gore (the axed off hand or the ripping of the brain from Eddie’s head are memorable). The storyline does have holes and there are some cheesy effects like when Marsha Quist (Elizabeth Brooks) is transforming into a she-wolf or her mad love fest or the cute little werewolf at the end of the film but it is not so bad as there are way worse out there for werewolf films (please see the rest of The Howling series for some examples).

Rating: “I’m gonna give you a piece of my mind” This movie bit me and I enjoyed it. Maybe it is because it was one of the first I have ever seen but even after seeing it over and over I still enjoy this film. It’s not the greatest werewolf movie but like said before there is a hell of lot worse out there.
