The Amityville Murders (2018)

The Amityville Murders (2018)

Country:  USA

Director:  Daniel Farrands

Main Stars:  John Robins, Chelsea Ricketts, Paul Ben-Victor, Diane Franklin, Rebekah Graf

Storyline:  The story of Butch DeFeo and why he killed his family in that house.

Review (Spoils): The story is the tale of the first murders in the old Amityville house that everyone knows about. The story plays off is the murder Butch really nuts or was there something more sinister haunting the house that drove him to murder his whole family. Most of the film plays off building characters and driving the feeling into you hating the father more then anything and actually cheering for the killer. Even though killing everyone did not make total sense unless it was the evil of the house.

John Robins play the main character the eldest son Butch who never could be anything in his fathers’ eyes and he gets caught up in drugs and the occult a finally snaps that one night. Chelsea Ricketts plays the sister Dawn who is the smartest one and the biggest one with the connection to the occult. Both characters stand out and you actually feel for them. The third would be Paul Ben-Victor who you love to hate so that means he did well play the asshole.

We got the same story but more detail on what happened that dark night and why. Lots of blood, beatings, gun shots and some hauntings.

Rating:  The Amityville series was always something that I never gave up on even though I should have when it came to haunting lamps, clocks and dollhouses. But the first three were not terrible. This film pays very good honor the series and to be honest should be watched if you are a fan of the originals.  Plus, its got a nice little added touch at the end which makes it feel it all blends great together. Well done for that alone.

Amityville Horror 2 (1982)

Amityville Horror 2 (1982)

Country: USA

Director: Damiano Damiani

Main Stars: James Olson, Burt Young, Rutanya Alda, Jack Magner, Diane Franklin

Storyline:  An Italian –American family move into the old Amityville house and the oldest son becomes possessed by an evil spirit. The family is in danger and a priest tries to have the young man’s soul.

Review (Spoils): The Montelli family move into the old Amityville house, they had family issues before they did and now they really do. The whole point of the film is the Sunny (Jack Magner) the eldest son gets possessed and becomes a bigger badass (not as big of ass as his father) then he already was. He tries to kill his family, sleep with his sister Patricia (Diane Franklin) and somewhere in there he becomes a version of The Exorcist. The last part of the film is a rip off of The Exorcist and it can be painful how bad Father Adamsky (James Olson) is for a priest.  Sure we have some cool blood in the holy water, a massive basement mess and a creepy incest scene but the acting is horrible. The film itself is not terrible but some of storyline went one direction and it never came back to the actual house.  The movie worked too much on the possession instead of the house and it lost some its Amityville charm because of it.  Yes in the first film George became possessed also but they did not just focus on that.

Rating:  This film is not bad, you want bad keep watching this series but its falls away from what made Amityville…Amityville.  When we think of it we think of the house not the demon that is in the house traveling. This movie is interesting (if you can get past the acting) but it fell off the Amityville rails and ended up being a The Exorcist rip off.
