Hellraiser 8: Hellworld (2005)
Director: Rick Bota
Main Stars: Lance Henriksen, Katheryn Winnick, Christopher Jacot, Doug Bradley
Storyline: A video game based on Hellraiser is dragging players to a rave which leads to the underground cult of Cenobites.
Review (Spoils): A bunch of young people grieve the death of their friend who committed suicide. Jake (a former friend of the group) narrows down that they were not there for their friend in his time of need before his death as they were all obsessed with a game known as Hellworld. Secret invitations and chats go out to the young people to come to a Hellworld house party/rave which then leads to be a trap into the hellish world of Hellraiser.
Sigh I hate it when writers decide it’s a great idea to place the franchise into the franchise, it’s not it always fails… see the series for Scream and Halloween for examples. It’s right up there with placing classic horror villains into space! Sure we have Lance Henriksen who is a horror legend but he cannot save this mind mess of an entry to the series. I personally loved the mind game idea in the series a few films ago but now it is just becoming silly and straying too far from the cube and Pinhead (Doug Bradley) himself. This film is more like a teen slasher than an actual Hellraiser film. Not even deaths and not enough classic feel in this one and it just might be the worse of the bunch.
Rating: This series has really driven off the rails and it does need to come back as I personally do normally enjoy them. Poor Doug Bradley and Lance Henriksen for this mess in the series, sorry guys. Not enough deaths, hooks, gore and cube for my liking …they need to focus on the Cenobites more and get back to the basics. I guess this film as Katheryn Winnick going for it?
Hellraiser 7 : Deader (2005)
Director: Rick Bota
Main Stars: Kari Wuhrer, Paul Rhys, Simon Kunz, Doug Bradley, Georgina Rylance
Storyline: A journalist gets entrapped into the underground world of the cenobites
Review (Spoils): Hot babe journalist Amy (Kari Wuhrer) is looking for her hot story and she comes across a videotape that shows an underground culture that can bring back the dead back to life. This all tracks down to a leader named Winter (Paul Rhys) who is controlling them. An ex member of the cult named Maria (Georgina Rylance) invites Amy to come to Romania but when she gets there Maria is dead with the puzzle box in her hands. Amy of course takes the puzzle box and opens it and unleashes Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and his evil cenobites.
First off Kari Wuhrer is smoking hot and I have been a fan boy of hers since her early Mtv days so that to me is a win. But overall this storyline and series has gone to the shitter. We have a total lack of Pinhead which is too bad as Doug Bradley is back to grace the screen but really like 30 seconds of screen time? Is this film horrible? Not really but there is better when it comes to the Hellraiser series. The Deaders was a neat idea and we do have some blood but you feel the low budget of the film and it almost sits on a made for TV movie.
Rating: We have Kari Wuhrer so can’t complain but man the cenobites could have used some more air time on this low budget film. You would almost think this was not a Hellraiser film.
The Cottage (2008)
Director: Paul Andrew Williams
Main Stars: Andy Serkis, Reece Shearsmith, Jennifer Ellison, Doug Bradley
Storyline: A kidnapping goes wrong when they come across a mad farmer.
Review (Spoils): David and Peter decide to kidnap Tracey who is a daughter of a powerful gangster for money. When dumbass brothers get the step brother Andrew involved getting the ransom money it all goes wrong as the bag is filled with paper. They race over to nearby village Tracey takes control of the situation but races over to a farm to reverse the ransom where a maniac farmer lives.
We have side comments, some funny moments and some maniac cannibal like fun. Blood and humour is what this one is about. This film is actually entertaining and funny…..not over the top but it kept me entertained.
Rating: I really have to be in the mood for comedy and horror to be together and I did not know this when I threw the disc on. Disappointing at first but it drew me in…..it is worth checking out.
Hellraiser 6: Hellseeker (2002)
Director: Rick Bota
Main Stars: Dean Winters, Ashley Laurence, Doug Bradley, Rachel Hayward, Sarah-Jane Redmond
Storyline: A business man comes across the puzzle box after his wife was killed in a car accident.
Review (Spoils): Major Spoilers! Kristy Cotten (Ashley Laurence) is all grown up but her and her husband Trevor (Dean Winters ) gets into a fatal car accident (in the water in which Kristy could not get out) leaving Trevor alone with a mysterious puzzle box. Trevor is now single and having constant nightmares of bad surgeries, his sexy boss being tormented and the truth of his plan to kill off Kristy is all coming out to pastor. Pinhead (Doug Bradley) meets Trevor and explains that all is going to be good on his end. Through all the madness Trevor actual finds out he died not Kristy and she caught on to his cheating and plan and she killed them all in a deal with Pinhead.
This film has blood, hooks, sexy ladies and an actual puzzling but fun storyline. This series is actual a lot of fun and really has not dulled much.
Rating: If you want a film that has cenoboits and some hot ladies (Ashley Laurence, Rachel Hayward, Sarah-Jane Redmond) you can’t go wrong. Not sure why people bash this series so much as the storylines within the series are not bad and fun to watch in most cases.
Hellraiser 5: Inferno (2000)
Director: Scott Derrickson
Main Stars: Craig Sheffer, Nicholas Turturro, James Remar, Doug Bradley
Storyline: A police detective gets driven mad in the world of torment, sadism and murder with the help of “The Engineer”.
Review (Spoils): Detective Thorne (Craig Sheffer) is a shady characterbut gets involved in a murder case that involves the famous puzzle box. The crime folder and the puzzle box all lead to a king of the murders called the Engineer. This leads to a child kidnapping and a bunch of murders. The Engineer keeps taunting him with a child’s finger, mind driving images and punishment for his own sins. This leads to the cenobites coming and explaining to him that since he figured out the puzzle box he is living in his own hell.
Rating: I actually enjoyed this film and thought it was pretty messed up, which is great for a Hellraiser film. We have Doug Bradley back again playing the famous Pinhead and nice good gore in this one.
Hellraiser 4 (1996)
Director: Kevin Yagher
Stars: Doug Bradley, Bruce Ramsay, Valentina Vargas, Kim Myers
Storyline: We learn the story and the creation of the puzzle box that opens the gates to Hell and unleashes Pinhead and his Cenobites.
Review: This film jumps back and forth through timelines as it tells the tale of the creator of the great legendary puzzle box that opens the gates to Hell. The film starts of in space in the future where a scientist (Bruce Ramsay) tries to undo what his ancestors created. This flops to the past with the toy maker (Bruce Ramsay) and the creation of the puzzle box which is sold to a rich noble man who uses witchcraft to infuse the box. The noble man sacrifices a beautiful noble girl (Valentina Vargas) and infuses her soul with the first demon. In this they wait to use the puzzle box to open the gates to Hell and destroy all bloodlines to the toymaker.
This bring us to modern times where the bloodline survived and the demon Angelique is back and still trying to kill the family off and unleash the box. Pinhead (Doug Bradley) arrives this time with a Cenobite dog and they wreck havoc and in the end Angelique crosses the line with him and he creates her a Cenobite too.
Now this bring us back the story telling in space where he is trying to re-open the box and send Pinhead back to Hell and we have some more blood, chains and the typical Hellraiser gore.
Rating: I hate space I really do. Horror and space do not mix normally unless it’s an Aliens series. Sure the movie flipped through timelines like a badly written book but I think it had to make sense really. Yes it did hurt the film a bit but overall it was not bad for the series and Valentina Vargas is smoking sexy and hot!
Hellraiser 3 (1992)
Director: Anthony Hickox
Main Stars: Terry Farrell, Kevin Bernhardt, Ken Carpenter, Paula Marshall, Doug Bradley, Ashley Lawrence
Storyline: An investigator reporter is looking for her big break. She comes across and involved in a strange murder of victim with chains and hooks. This all leads to the Boiler Room bar where the owner has bought a brass pillar of evil that contains Pinhead and the box.
Review (Spoils): Sexy reporter Joey Summerskill (Terry Farrell) is looking for her big break without being sold as a sex symbol. During a boring skit at the hospital she comes across a man in a stretcher that is wrapped in hooks and chains that act alive. In the end his head explodes in the operating room and he was found with a rocker chick named Terri (Paula Marshall). This all comes down to the owner of the Boiler Room a playboy type dude named J.P. (Kevin Bernhardt )that bought the pillar that Pinhead(Doug Bradley) is trapped in. Finally she gets her big story!
The film goes on into detail of J.P leading whores into his room to become victims to Pinhead so that he can be released. Throughout the film Pinhead becomes the main character and we learn a bit of the background story of him, such as Captain Elliot Spencer. Also we are tortured with new cenobites that are dumber as ever such as the camera headed one and the Cd one. This turns the film into a joke.
Rating: Not a great as the first two this film goes to the far side of the Hellraiser series. It started off pretty good and then just fell apart which cheesiness. The new coenobites are stupid, the fake lightning is bad, and the ending is downright embracing (come on the church scene?). The movie lost its darkness with this entry even though it tried to keep up with the gore. Doug Bradley stole the show with his acting in this film but all the others lacked. Thank god Armored Staint was in the film!
Hellraiser 2 (1988)
Director: Tony Randel
Main Stars: Doug Bradley, Ashley Laurence, Imogen Boorman, Kenneth Cranham, Clare Higgins
Storyline: Kristy is in an insane asylum since her father’s death but Dr.Channard has other plans for her. He unleashes the Cenobites and opens a gateway to Hell.
Review (Spoils): Kristy (Ashley Laurence) is back but in a mental hospital and is Dr. Channard’s (Kenneth Cranham) patient. What Kristy does not know is he holds the bloody mattress that holds the remains of the late Julia (Clare Higgins) and he wants to resurrect her and re-open the gate to Hell. This brings the Cenobites back to the mortal plane and want to show to the doctor the intense sensations of pleasure and pain. We got the puzzle box, Pinhead (Doug Bradley), new Cenobites and lots of blood and chains.
The film sits on the strange and opens the door for where the series goes after this entry. Especially the visions that Tiffany (Imogen Boorman) has when she in the hospital of babies with sewed mouths and the baby cry sounds. The strange is one of the reasons why this series does so well for me. This film has some great horror sequences (another great moment is the scene of the sexual moaning bloody bodies on the slabs.
Rating: Here is a great sequel it takes over where the last one left off. Pinhead has always been one of my favorite villains and the Cenobites do not disappoint in this film. Grab some beers, keep a open mind and remember “The Doctor is in!”
Director: Clive Barker
Main Stars: Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Doug Bradley
Storyline: Larry (Andrew Robinson) is a married man to Julia (Clare Higgins) and his daughter Kristy (Ashley Laurence) does not like this one bit! Larry’s stepbrother Frank (Sean Chapman) was once a secret lover of Julia messes around with a demonic puzzle box and opens a gate from Hell to Earth. Here come the S&M Cenobites!
Review: Ok did you follow that storyline? Its gets more complicated but at the same time it does not ruin the movie at all. Clive Barker jams us with more storyline that brings the feel of the movie full circle. The low down is Frank uses the puzzle box and pays the piper for doing so and Julia brings him back and they kill Larry, which Frank takes his skin. Cenobites come by and want a soul!
So we have the introduction to Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and his nasty Cenobites. They like blood, torture, chains, hooks and little bit of S&M. Definitely a memorable bunch for horror fans. This is the best of the whole series and if you are not big on blood, hooks and skin you might want to pass on this one or get a babies blanket. This film brings on the red!
Rating: This movie has it all, blood, gore, sex, torture, puzzle boxes and a young good looking woman (Ashley Laurence if you can get past the 80s look). Doug Bradley does an awesome job as Pinhead and this is just the start of the series. Clive Barker…. thank you for your demented imagination.
