Blair Witch 2 : Book of Shadows (2000)
Director: Jo Berlinger
Main Stars: Jeffery Donovan, Stephen Barker Turner, Erica Leerhsen , Tristine Skyler, Erica Leershen, Kim Director
Storyline: A group of young people after viewing the Blair Witch Project explore the myth.
Review (Spoils): due to the success of the film someone decides to cash in on this and opens the Blair Witch Hunt Tour. A group of young people join this to see what the myth is all about as they loved the film. They end up in Rustin’s Parr’s old house and spend the night. They did not sleep at all that night and realise yet they don not remember anything that happened. After investigating this truth comes out that the witch has come for them.
If you took the tag of the Blair Witch off this film and changed the myth to something else this film actually would have been decent. Unfortunately how do you try to make a sequel to something that was sold as a video tape of a real documentary? You can’t …so that’s why this film was set to fail. The film outside of the name is actual good. We have some trippy nightmares, some blood and some babes (Kim Director the goth chick of my heart). The play back of the film within the story is actually fun and this does pass off as a nice haunted film but drop the idea of it being Blair Witch.
Rating: I will honestly say I never understood why people went crazy for the Blair Witch Project as I found myself bored in the theater till the very end. Was it unique yes but at least this has some babes and it’s more like a haunted cabin film which in a way was the more interesting part of the first film. Now does that make this a classic and the original not? Of course not…. But you can drink to the goth babe!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
Director: Marcus Nispel
Stars: Jessica Biel, Jonathan Tucker, Andrew Bryniarski, Erica Leerhsen, R.Lee Ermey, Terrence Evans, Heather Kafka, Kathy Lamkin
Storyline: Five friends find themselves stalked by a deformed chainsaw wielding maniac and a inbreed family.
Review: Welcome to Texas where hitchhikers are horny or just nuts and carry guns in their crotch!
In this remake of the classic from the 1970’s we have a more modern group of dope smoking teens heading to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert . They come across a couple hitchhikers (see above) and before they know it one of them blows off her head and off they become targets for a redneck family. This film tries to stay true to the original with Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski) wielding his mighty chainsaw and the family tormenting the teens. We have some great scenes of gore such as, heads blown off, brains, body parts, chainsaw murders, cars running over people and lots of blood. The film tries to pay ode to the original and the second film with such scenes of the classic meat hook and the skinning and wear one victims face as a mask.
But to me it tried too hard. It tried to be over the top which the original never really had to do. It relied on gore, blood and guts. The family itself is over populated to the point you almost cannot keep track of them all. The first film kept it simple with a small group this one is like a Rob Zombie film it is all over the place with characters and plot holes.
Rating: First rule of horror don’t fuck with a classic. Sure this remake is semi-decent but if it is not broken do not re-invent the wheel. The whole cannibal connection is missing from this film. But we do have Jessica Biel in her hotness running around in soaking white top through most of the film. So that counts for something.
Wrong Turn 2 (2007)
Director: Joe Lynch
Main Stars: Erica Leerhsen, Henry Rollins, Texas Battle, Aleksa Palladino, Daniella Alonso, Crystal Lowe
Storyline: A reality show is being knocked off one by one by a group of inbred cannibals.
Review (Spoils): Colonel Dale Murphy (Henry Rollins) is hosting a post-apocalyptic reality show in the wastelands. It is not long after that they realized that they are a target for food by a group of inbred cannibal rednecks. They capture Dale and slowly start killing off the contestants one by one. The family of cannibals have grown as now we have female cannibals also in the mix. The film gives us the normal teenage conflict with the reality contestants and we have some bloody fun such as being tied to truck, lip biting, cannibal child birth, cannibal redneck masturbating, arrows, knives, axes, barb wire deaths, lots of flesh eating and some grinders. We have blood and we have guts in this one.
This film just does not have what the first one did. It is missing that 70s feel which the first film captured and used. I found the characters are your regular horror movie teenagers with labels and the typical jealous he is cheating on me crap. But Henry Rollins did an actual good job playing the hard ass which suites his character in real life.
Rating: The film fell off the rails for what made the first one so great. If it was not for the babes this film would of fell flat as the redneck cannibal in the hills is starting to wear thin for horror movies. The twist with the regular guy being the non-mutated father was just too much to believe and it lost me from there.
