Ginger Snaps 3 (2004)
Director: Grant Harvey
Main Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Emily Perkins, Stephen Massicotte, Hugh Dillon
Storyline: We go back to the 19th century and learn the history of the sisters and their curse.
Review (Spoils): We travel back in time before the first film into the 19th century. Brigitte (Emily Perkins) and Ginger (Katherine Isabelle) come across a trade post which becomes under attack from a clan of werewolves. While they are trapped there and trying to survive an Indian hunter decides to help the girls survive as one of them becomes bitten by a werewolf and the curse begins for them.
I’m not positive what they were hoping to get out of this film besides some backstory which kind of ruins the first 2 movies. We learn about their original parents and why their bond is so strong as sisters but this film is lacking the dark humor which was so great about the first film. Sure we have the talents of Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins again but it is just not the same and the Ginger character just does not fit with this type of background. The special effects of the werewolves are actually pretty cool and near the end of the film you can really get a good look at them. Lots of red blood and fur flying in this film.
Rating: I personally loved the first film as it was a breath of fresh air for the werewolf films but now that we are trying to twist a backstory of the series this kind of left me bored. We have two very talented actresses but the storyline just was not the same to be part of the series. They would of been better off doing another sequel in the same lines of the first two films.
American Mary (2012)
Director: Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska
Main Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk
Storyline: A medical student needs cash she gets into the body modification business which leads to a darker side of life.
Review (Spoils): Mary Manson (Katherine Isabelle) is beautiful and smart but she just cannot make ends meet and she has the eye of her teacher Mr. Grant. This leads to her to become a stripper but someone needed underground medical attention and she becomes the new surgeon for the underground strip joint. During all this she gets invited to a surgeon gala which leads to Mr. Grant drugging and raping her which brings out the Bloody Mary part of Mary(she gets her revenge on him). She gets a strange call from a plastic looking lady named Beatress (Tristan Risk )which leads Mary to become also a underground body modification surgeon for the freaks of the land.
We got lots of the blood, stitching, stabbings, knife cuts, scars, weird body modification and even some nasty body hooks. This is not for the weak as there is some weird scenes but at the same time they are quick. Too be honest the drug and rape scene is more unsettling.
Katherine Isabelle blesses the horror screen again with her beauty and her great acting. She plays the snarky, smart yet a tad psycho very well known character as Mary. Antonio Cupo also does a great job playing the sleazy owner of the strip joint and who also has a strange attraction to Mary (who can blame him really).
Rating: This film reminded me of May which is a good thing. It was different and it did not rely on torture which many films now fall under and it can be boring. The storyline and the characters were interesting which held my full attention. Plus we have sexy Katherine Isabelle in black stockings and also gracing the screen with blood what more can I really ask?
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Director: John Fawcett
Stars: Emily Perkins, Katherine Isabelle
Storyline: Two goth sisters must deal with the fact that one of them is a werewolf
Review: Two sisters that are very goth and interested in death feel that they are the outcasts of society. When the wilder one of the two Ginger (Katherine Isabelle) becomes bitten by a werewolf is now infected the changes they must face together become even more overbearing. Because of the death pact the two sisters made her more death loving sister Brigitte (Emily Perkins) races against time to help find a cure for her sister before she becomes more monsterous from the disease.
This is a fun film it deals a lot with being outcasts and it is ok. As Ginger becomes more of a woman she is dragged into more of beast. I love that the film played off the first menstruation as the reasoning behind the werewolf attack and the reasoning of the mother believes her daughter behaviour is also different. The makeup is great in this film as Ginger slowly starts to grow hair around her wound and she gains a tail. We have dog attacks, blood, throats torn open, more blood and cutting off tails with a knife. This is all about teenage fun with a good shot of werewolf blood.
Rating: Ginger Snaps sits high up on the shelf for me when it comes to werewolf films. It was fresh and it brought back some of the fun I had with An American Werewolf in London way back when. It’s a whole new take with the two sisters and their journey as best friends and into women hood. Great acting, awesome story and lots of blood. One of the best werewolf films out there go and check it out!
