Hellraiser 8: Hellworld (2005)
Director: Rick Bota
Main Stars: Lance Henriksen, Katheryn Winnick, Christopher Jacot, Doug Bradley
Storyline: A video game based on Hellraiser is dragging players to a rave which leads to the underground cult of Cenobites.
Review (Spoils): A bunch of young people grieve the death of their friend who committed suicide. Jake (a former friend of the group) narrows down that they were not there for their friend in his time of need before his death as they were all obsessed with a game known as Hellworld. Secret invitations and chats go out to the young people to come to a Hellworld house party/rave which then leads to be a trap into the hellish world of Hellraiser.
Sigh I hate it when writers decide it’s a great idea to place the franchise into the franchise, it’s not it always fails… see the series for Scream and Halloween for examples. It’s right up there with placing classic horror villains into space! Sure we have Lance Henriksen who is a horror legend but he cannot save this mind mess of an entry to the series. I personally loved the mind game idea in the series a few films ago but now it is just becoming silly and straying too far from the cube and Pinhead (Doug Bradley) himself. This film is more like a teen slasher than an actual Hellraiser film. Not even deaths and not enough classic feel in this one and it just might be the worse of the bunch.
Rating: This series has really driven off the rails and it does need to come back as I personally do normally enjoy them. Poor Doug Bradley and Lance Henriksen for this mess in the series, sorry guys. Not enough deaths, hooks, gore and cube for my liking …they need to focus on the Cenobites more and get back to the basics. I guess this film as Katheryn Winnick going for it?
Satan’s Little Helper (2004)
Director: Jeff Lieberman
Main Stars: Alexander Brickel, Katheryn Winnick, Stephen Graham, Amanda Plummer
Storyline: A young boy unknowingly helps a serial killer kill on Halloween.
Review (Spoils): We have the strange loser like kid Dougie Whooly (Alexander Brickel ) who is addicted to a video game called “Satan’s Little Helper” he lives and breathes this very cheesy game in which you kill and hurt people for points. He is so addicted to it that he wants to be the little devil character for Halloween. His mom (Amanda Plummer) goes along with it as she is a crazy for Halloween also and pretty much gives Dougie anything he wants. Just by coincidence a serial killer is in town and dressed as Satan and Dougie runs into him and thinks everything is just like the game. This after he takes a jealous fit over his sister Jenna’s (Katheryn Winnick) new boyfriend Alex (Stephen Graham). Dougie brings Satan home and the whole family think it is Alex dressed up and they find out after many deaths that it is not.
The film itself flows pretty good and the storyline is unique and it works well for a Halloween film. Sure Alexander Brickel and Amanda Plummer characters can drive you nuts and really can a kid be that stupid? But overall the movie is not bad. Plus we have the very hot Katheryn Winnick throughout the film and her acting is great (thinking of the tavern girl outfit right now….hmmmm). They could have picked someone with better acting skills than Stephen Graham as he just was not believable but it did not ruin the film.
Rating: Overall I enjoyed this film and have seen it a few times now. Yes it comes down to really can a kid be that stupid but for the overall gore and blood this one does well. Plus did I mention that Katheryn Winnick is smoking hot?
