Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Country: USA

Director:  Zack Synder

Main Stars:  Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, Lindy Booth, Michael Kelly, Kevin Zegers, Jayne Eastwood, Jake Weber, Kim Poirier, Inna Korobkina

Storyline:  Survivors of the zombie outbreak trap themselves in a mall and try to survive.

Review (Spoils): Remake time yet again and this time this is with a massive classic. I personally put this one off for a long time to see as I was not crazy about the idea. We have Ana (Sarah Polley) trapped with a group of misfits within a mall as they plan to escape and live somewhere else in a world full of zombies. While they all work together on how to escape and why this is happening in the world, they also find out each other dirty laundry.  The film bases mostly on them trying to work together and stopping the spread of the zombie infection.

The film does stray away from the original script by a lot which is a good thing and they dropped most of the comedy stuff from the original. Yes, we have some unique characters and the build is not bad. The eye candy from the film is there as Sarah Polley (the hero), Lindy Booth (the silly young one that does stupid stuff) and Kim Poirier (the bubbly blonde). All three of them did a great job and I did not dislike them.  Ty Burrell did an amazing job also as you wanted to hate him, and he played the part very well.

Now to what I did not care for, the young pregnant couple was painful. Mekhi Phifer and Inna Korobkina characters were not enjoyable and not even smart in anyway and they seemed to be out of place. The acting was poor, and I cheered for the zombie baby. Bad selection on actors.  The second hurting unit of this film was fast moving zombies, I hate fucking running zombies.

We got lots of gun shots, zombies bites, a zombie baby with glowing eyes, some cool skin rot special effects, a gross fat undead woman, some chainsaws, and more zombies then you can track. The gore is not over the top as the original, but the zombie action is there.

Rating:  Going to be honest here, this film was not bad for a remake. It stayed away from the original enough to not hurt it and yet it did pay homage to it. The ladies were great, and I was glued to the screen to see how this all is going to work out for them. The movie was not bad but like I have said many times I really hate fast moving zombies and once I saw them go, I was kicked to the curve on thought.  But overall the flick was fun and entertaining for a zombie movie. Well done Sarah Polley! As a side note was Kim Poirier trying to be Sherri Moon? (it worked for me).

6/10 Beers!

Frozen (2010)

Frozen (2010)

Country: USA

Director:  Adam Green

Main Stars: Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell, Kevin Zegers

Storyline:  Three skiers get stranded on a chairlift after they talked to the employer to let go for one more run after hours.

Review (Spoils):  Three skiers Joe (Shawn Ashmore) his best friend Dan (Kevin Zegers) and his girlfriend Parker (Emma Bell) are trying to run a scam at the ski resort so that they can ski for cheaper. After having Parker works her charms they get a day of skiing for cheap, so cheap that they go for another run after the place closes.  This leads to miscommunication to the shift change and they get trapped on the chairlift at night after hours. What to do to survive the bitter cold?

This film plays on a lot of character build which is kind of long but once they are trapped in the chair the real movie begins.  We lots of gore, wolf attacks, frozen skin and lots of gooey skin gore, fun winter times! The film does just sort of end but it the film works mostly on in-tenseness and dealing with the situation of being trapped.

Rating: I had no idea about his movie at all and came across it and thought I would give it a shot. To be honest it was actually not bad after the character build and it kept me interested. Totally surprised by this film as it worked on the being intense sort of like Burning Bright, the acting was great and Adam Green did a great job.
