Manhattan Baby (1982)

Manhattan Baby (1982)

Country:  Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci

Main Stars: Christopher Connelly, Laura Lenzi, Brigitta Boccoli , Cinzia de Ponti, Giovanni Frezza

Storyline:  An archaeologist opens an Egyptian tomb and the spirit gets released and his daughter becomes possessed.

mv5bmtkwmjkwotuwmf5bml5banbnxkftztcwotqwote1mq__v1_uy268_cr40182268_al_Review (Spoils): The Hacker family travel to Egypt, where there was an accident to the father George (blue blinding light) and the daughter Susie meets a blind woman and receives a ancient blue eyed amulet (see the connection?).  We learn that the amulet has granted them powers to move through dimensional doorways. During all this weirdness starts like scorpions appearing, snakes and piles of sand.  We learn that the voyages actually go to the desert in Egypt and that the amulet holds the secret of an ancient evil.

We have a mystery in our hands with this one, lots of dream like sequences and symbols of Egypt. Not much gore or little red blood in this one but instead focusing on the ancient writings and context of Egypt and the curse of the blue eye jewel

Rating: The story is not horrible but at the same time it is not one of Lucio Fulci stronger films. Plus we have that annoying kid from The House by the Cemetery  Giovanni Frezza but the sound and music is so Lucio Fulci. Drink to all the blue lighting used in this film or chug to each view of a snake on the screen to enjoy.

The New York Ripper (1982)

The New York Ripper (1982)

Country:  Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci

Main Stars: Jack Hedley, Almanta Suska, Howard Ross

Storyline:  A crazy stalker is killing woman around New York City.

MV5BMjE2MTQ5NDEyMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTEwMjkxMQ@@__V1_UY268_CR2,0,182,268_AL_Review (Spoils):  We have women that are being stalked and killed within the City of the New York. A dog comes across a woman’s hand that brings the film to the open case. As the police investigate on the hand we learn that it belongs to a local prostitute and that her landlady overheard a conversation with her and a man who sounded like Donald Duck.  (Yes you read that right)

Lucio Fulci is always been known for his crazy cannibal/zombie films but this time he tries something that Dario Argento would of done. We have a burned out old police detective and young psychotherapy professor that try find out who is killing all these young girls with the Donald Duck voice. We have lots of blood, red, gore, lots of switchblades, broken bottles, shotguns and missing fingers. We have a lot of gore in this film.

Rating: Want a film that leaves you going whoa?! I love Lucio Fulci and this film was not disappointing. The killer was unique and I loved the idea of the Donald Duck voice as it is memorable for horror. We have gruesome killings and I can see how this movie landed in the Nasty list. Well done Lucio Fulci!

A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (1971)

A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin (9171)

Country: Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci

Main Stars: Florinda Bolkan, Stanley Baker, Jean Sorel

Storyline: A woman is being blamed for the murder of her neighbour after she dreamt it.

MV5BMTM5NTI5MjAyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTY2MTEyMQ@@__V1_SY317_CR4,0,214,317_AL_Review (Spoils): Carol Hammond (Florinda Bolkan) is one messed up woman she keeps having dreams of having sex with her female neighbour downstairs and taking some massive drugs and having orgies (actually this sounds like a cool thing). But the problem is when she started to have these messed up dreams people started to die. She is being framed or she possibly killing in her sleep in a freaky lesbian nympho way?

What’s more fun than a good horror film filled with murder? Well one that is a trippy drug infested orgy!!! Carol is so open about her dreams and erotic ones in her diary that she becomes a suspect to the murders. We have stabbings, wet dreams, hippies, bats, throat slashes and some serious drugs.

Basically it is a who did it murder film filled with classy sex and drugs. Florinda Bolkan does an amazing job and uses her facial expressions and the camera to show the trouble that she is thinking. She battles the conflict of what seems wrong and embarrassing for her and also yet enjoyment.

Rating: This is not one of Lucio Fulci gory films but instead it moves more like a Dario Argento film. This is not a bad thing as the film is more of murder mystery with a wicked shot of acid. This is not going to be a average horror fans cup of tea but if you love the 70s era of horror it just might be.

Zombi 3 (1988)

Zombi 3 (1988)

Country: Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci, Claudio Fragasso

Main Stars: Deran Sarafian, Beatrice Ring, Ottaviano Dell’Acqua

Storyline: A body has a chemical infection, when cremated it spreads a virus into the air to create zombies

MV5BMjEwNzQ3MTcyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwODcwNjA5__V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_AL_Review (Spoils): A chemical compound called Death One is created which can bring the dead back to life. The chemical plant gets attacked by terrorists and the compound gets tampered with which infects and kills one of the men. The bio soldiers overtake the plant back and burn the now dead body of the terrorist which spreads the chemical into the air.

During all this a small group of U.S. Army boys come across a small group of ladies and during their journey they get attacked by birds. All of sudden zombies start to appear in the area and people start getting attacked. We have killer zombie birds, zombies, zombies in a pool, legs ripped off, nasty bites, lots of blood and gore. The acting is not the greatest but it does deliver some good old fashion zombie gore. The flying zombie head was just stupid but the zombie baby was a nice little touch to the film.

Rating: Having no real connection to the first Zombi film (Zombi 2) it was too bad that Lucio Fulci had to leave due to illness as this could of went the right direction. This film is not even close to the first film in greatness but if you’re in the mood for some European zombie films it will fit the bill.

Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972)

Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972)

Country:  Italy

Director:  Lucio Fulci

Stars: Florinda Bolkan, Barbara Bouchet, Tomas Milian

Storyline:  A reporter and a young woman try to solve a series of child murders.

MV5BOTU4MTMzMzYyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjM3MzI0MQ@@__V1_SY317_CR3,0,214,317_Review: A young journalist named Andrea (Tomas Milian) and a young beautiful woman named Patriza (Barbara Bouche) try to figure out who is killing off little boys. This leads to colourful characters which almost everyone has a hidden secret or a skeleton in their closet. The film moves more like a thriller instead of the typical gore fest that Lucio normally gives us. The film is strong on plot and mystery of who the actual child killer is. Personally I think the killer itself is interesting as they keep taunting the investigation which the strange quaking duck voice, which in my own view is scary and freaky. Yes the film can be unsettling due to the topic and some of the odd scenes can be graphic.

Rating: This is not your typical Lucio film and this film was so not what I was expecting. I personally believe this is one Lucio best outside the gore of his eyeball impaling fame. If you have not seen this film you should check it out as a movie fan period. Not you’re typical horror but defiantly a great murder mystery thriller, a memorable killer in this one.

A Cat in the Brain (1990)

A Cat in the Brain (1990)

Country:  Italy

Storyline:  A horror director is being hunted down by a killer who is murdering people after the gory death scenes of the director’s films.

Review (Spoils):  The fun part of this film is Lucio Fulci plays himself. He thinks he is losing his mind so he goes to see a psychiatrist. Everything that he see’s in his head are visions of the gory details of films that he has done in the past.  What he does not know is Swharz (David L. Thompson) his doctor is up to no good and is helping him by driving him mad by placing thoughts and images into his mind.  We got lots of gore in this film, we have chainsaws, piano wire decapitation, stabbings and of course cats eating bodies.  The film plays on a lot of dream sequences and visions as that is what is driving Lucio mad and making him think he is the madman.

Rating:  Bring on the blood and gore in this one, but is that really any different than anything Lucio Fulci has done? I find this film not one of his strongest but at the same time it is not his weakest either.  The movie holds a strange name for a film which is just as strange in general.

The House by the Cemetery (1981)

The House by the Cemetery (1981)

Country: Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci

Storyline: A couple move from New York to Dr.Freudstein’s house to do research on the late doctor. They learn a terrible secret of the late doctor.

Review (spoils): Dr. Norman Boyle (Paolo Malcom), his wife Lucy (Catriona MacColl) and son Bobby (Giovanni Frezza) move from New York to the great ancient house by the cemetery of Dr.Freudstein. Bobby has been having images in his head not to go and has been communicate by a strange little red headed girl named Mae not to go. Nobody listens to the kid and they move there. Once there strange things happen such as sounds of children crying, insane bat attacks, people dying and the mysterious basement not counting the beautiful but deadly quit babysitter Anne (Ania Pieroni). Through it all they find out that Dr.Freudstein is really not dead so to speak but buried in the basement of the house where he kills to keep living in his undead form.

This film is your typical Lucio Fulci film with lots of camera action to the characters eyes, lots of red blood, gore, throat rips, maggots, bad overdub and good ol’ eye gouging. The Dr.Freudstein monster is great and the sound effects of the children crying for the zombie like creature is an awesome add in.

Downfall of the film is the child character Bobby, man this kid is annoying and the overdub is so bad to the English language. Also the ending just kind of just ends which is too bad because overall this not a horrible film.

Rating: This is a typical Italian horror film but at the same time not as confusing as some of the films done by Lucio Fulci. Sure the acting is not the greatest but these films are more known for the gore and blood then prime acting but it does have Catriona MacColl like the other films. Drink up for the crazy and undead Dr.Freudstein.

City of the Living Dead (1980)

City of the Living Dead (1980)

Country:  Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci

Stars:  Christopher George, Catriona MacColl, Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Fabrizio Jovine

Storyline: A priest hangs himself and it opens the gates to hell. The dead start walk upon the earth.

Review (spoils): A priest (Fabrizio Jovine) hangs himself and for some reason this opens the gates to hell. This leads to a reporter Peter (Christopher George) and a psychic Mary (Catriona MacColl) to figure the mystery and destroy the now evil priest that is helping raise the dead upon the earth before All Saints Day.  Yes it is a weak storyline but it is Lucio Fulci and he is not known for strong story but massive freaky gore and that he does deliver in this film. This film has lots of bleeding eyes, a woman who barfs out her innards (classic scene), drill bit through the head, worms, sky of maggots, walking flesh eating zombies and lots of brain ripping out of the head. This Lucio Fulci film aims to please the gore hounds. Seeing this part of the Lucio Fulci “Gates of Hell” trilogy you can really see the overlap of this film and The Beyond.

Rating: Not as great as The Beyond but it still holds its own. This film is not for every horror fan you actually have to enjoy the Italian horror era to get it. Which means crazy storylines but all out gore. God I love Lucio Fulci. Drink up!

The Beyond (1981)

The Beyond (1981)

Country: Italy

Director:  Lucio Fulci

Main Stars: Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia Monreale

Storyline:  A young woman inherits an old hotel in Louisiana what she did not know is the cellar is sitting on top of one of the seven gateways to Hell.

Review (Spoils):  We have the very talented and beautiful blonde and green eyed Liza (Catriona MacColl) who has had many jobs but her uncle left her an old hotel in his estate to her. She takes the time to get the old house fixed up to standards so that she can open it for business. One of her more main concerns is the cellar as it is leaking water (leaking is an understatement it is like a god damn sewer).  One by one accidents start happening and the dead start to come back to haunt the house and the people involved around it.  Bring on the zombies!

Take what you see with a grain of salt with this film; remember it is the power of Hell. Some of the scenes might not make total sense such as the acid spills on the mother when she falls or the tarantula scene. Outside of the wackiness of the film it is over the top on the gore factor and it is a classic Italian film.  We have dog attacks, spiders eating tongues, lots of eyeballs being popped, blood everywhere and even a few acid melting flesh scenes. Even the blind eyes ( example is Cinzia Monreale ‘s character) from viewing the wastelands of Hell are well done Lots of the classic shock and gore that Lucio Fulci is known for.

Rating:  This movie is way out there but so are a lot of Lucio Fulci’s films. The zombies are really well done and the gore is over the top. This director is one of my favorites in the horror genre and this is gem of a zombie flick.

Zombi 2 (1979)

Zombi 2(1979)

Country:  Italy

Director: Lucio Fulci

Main Stars: Tisa Farrow, Ian McCulloch, Richard Johnson

Storyline: A journalist and a daughter of a scientist travel to a remote island searching for her missing father. Upon the island doctors are looking for a cure for a disease that is making the dead raise and walk among the living.

Review:  First off to solve some confusion there is no Zombi 2 or is it 1… not sure why but why is it? (something to do with a connection with Dawn of the Dead) Now to the goodness of one my favorite horror movies, this is a gore fest! The storyline is very simple and starts off fast with the floating boat scene.  But where is the missing doctor? So we travel to a tropical island and meet another couple who are traveling and lord behold we have a group for the zombies to chase and eat.

Lucio Fulci goes all out with the effects in this film, from throats being ripped out, the classic eye scene and the famous zombie vs shark sequence.  The make-up and design of the zombies are beyond great and this is one of the very best zombie films out there.  This was the first film of Lucio Fulci that I had seen at that time and this was just the start to my great relationship with his other great films. I’m a fan! This is must see for all horror lovers and zombie fans alike.

Rating: This is one of those films that I try to throw on at least once every couple of years as it is a classic zombie movie (At one time it was every October). I did not want to spoil all the gory details but this one is a great flick to throw on, grab some beers and enjoy the english over dub.
