Return of the Living Dead 3 (1993)
Director: Brian Yuzna
Main Stars: Kent McCord, James T. Callahan, Sarah Douglas, Melinda Clarke, J. Trevor Edmond
Storyline: After seeing the experiment of bring the dead back to life a young man tries to do the same to his girlfriend who was killed in a motorcycle accident.
Review (Spoils): The government continue their experiments on the dead to come back to life for military uses. The colonel son named Curt (J. Trevor Edmond ) finds this out and he and his girlfriend Julie (Melinda Clarke) get involved in a motorcycle accident on the way home. Julie is pronounced dead so Curt takes her back to the lab and brings her back to life. What Curt learns is she is not fully the same woman that she was before the accident.
This film series had a rough go when the part 2 came out so I was not expecting a lot from this film. If you can get past the cheesie beginning this film is actually not bad. The film has character build and the gore is actually pretty damn good and over the top. This is a gory tale of true love and the Julie character is sexy but yet gory and deadly and she is definitely a memorable horror icon in my books. We have flesh eating, chewing, cool zombies, some drill scenes, the sexy zombie babe Melinda Clarke, some nasty cuts and of course the classic impaling scene.
Rating: This series has risen back to the ranks of the first film. I actually liked this film enough that I would place this into rotation in my horror collection. If you’re a horror fan and have not seen this film it is a must see at least once as it is a classic for the series.
Return of the Living Dead 2 (1988)
Director: Ken Wiederhorn
Main Stars: James Karen, Thor Van Lingen, Thom Matthews, Suzanne Snyder, Marsha Dietlein
Storyline: After the first film a radioactive container gets dropped in the sewer system causing zombies to return.
Review (Spoils): The zombies are back and they want more BRAINS! Following the idea of the first film we have a stoned driver who was not paying attention and a container of radioactive stuff gets dumped in the water system. The dead started to walk as a young group of men stealing skulls come across them, a young kid who wants to be cool and his teenage sister and hunky cable guy. The film is not to be taken serious just like the first one and there is lots of one liners, screaming, talking zombies, stupid reactions, some blood, yellow and black goo, the classic finger bite, brains being eaten, talking heads and bouncing zombie hands.
More yelling and screaming then anything but the zombies are not bad except for the odd one that is supposed to be funny. We have the annoying yet hot redhead Suzanne Snyder screaming through most of it.
Rating: Not as good as the first one we have another entry for the Return of the Living Dead series. The acting is pretty lame and to be honest if it was not for the 80s hotness (Suzanne Snyder) this film would of been pretty damn boring and annoying. The zombies are pretty decent and the make-up is good but the acting and lines are pretty hard to take.
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Director: Dan O’Bannon
Main Stars: Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Linnea Quigley
Storyline: An accident at a medical supply house releases a deadly gas which brings the dead back to life.
Review (Spoils): Humour with blood what is there not to love? We have accident at a medical suppy warehouse that leaks a gas which brings the dead back to life. So we have zombies that just happen to feed upon a group of misfits punk teenagers. Why punk kids? Well because they love hanging around the graveyard.
This film is funny as hell and should not be taken seriously. It’s a pun to the classic Night of the Living Dead and it delivers. The acting is great; they played the parts perfectly which is pretty much beyond silly. We have fast moving zombies (which I’m not a fan of) but they it works in this film. The special effects are really well done and the ending brings out the gore! Dan O’Bannon created a horror comedy masterpiece.
Rating: This is a must see for horror fans but keep in mind its keeps the slap stick first and horror second. This is the beginning of a long series of humour horror for zombies but it is the best of the series. Grab some buddies, some beers and drink up every time you hear BRAINS!
