Leatherface (2017)

Leatherface (2017)

Country:  USA

Director:  Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury

Main Stars:  Stephen Dorff, Lili Taylor, Sam Strike, Vanessa Grasse, Sam Coleman, Finn Jones, Jessica Madsen, James Bloor, Nathan Cooper

Storyline:  The story of Leatherface’s childhood past is told

Review (Spoils): The film starts out explaining why the police force and the people in the county fear the Sawyers family. Verna (Lili Taylor) the mother of the madness loses her children including Leatherface who at this point is Hal (Stephen Dorff). The film goes into the mental hospital where they finally break loose and take a sexy nurse (Vanessa Grasse) with them. As the runaway and kill off people on this path of freedom we see connection of none other Nubbins (Nathan Cooper). The truth is told about why Leatherface becomes the monster he is.

This film screams like it was directed by Rob Zombie but not in a bad way. I am a hardcore Sawyer fan and it takes a lot for me to hate a Texas Chainsaw film and this one was not bad. Sure, its got another in the past storyline and with a film in this series it does become confusion which order they stand and how many different begins could we have? The only thing this film was missing in the end was it should have shown him walking to a slaughter farm, so it would show some continuity.

We some chainsaw action (but not much), lots of blood, some gore, gunshots, slashing, stabbing, some tormenting and none stop weirdness as it is the Sawyers!

Rating:  Rob Zombie should be honored that they stole of The Devil Rejects feel for this film as he stole form the series to begin with, House of 1000 Corpses. Sure, the film is not as great as the first two original ones, but it does make a come back from the last one which was a teeny bop nightmare. Also Lili Taylor surprised me, she rocked the role!

From a die hard fan of the series thank you for bringing some life back to the series!

Lets keep making them!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

Country: USA

Director: Jonathan Liebesman

Main Stars: Jordana Brewster, Matt Bomer, Diora Baird, R. Lee Ermey, Andrew Bryniarski, Taylor Handley

Storyline: A group of young people get into an accident and get taken to a secluded house where a young man is slowly becoming the man known as Leatherface.

MV5BMTMwODg0NDgyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODE5OTMzMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_AL_Review (Spoils): A slaughterhouse worker goes into labour and dies from complication even the deformed young child survives. The baby goes through rough times but is finally taken in by the Hewitt family and names Thomas (Andrew Bryniarski). He works a meat packing plant but that closes which drives the young man into a fit of murdering rage and he starts his killing spree. His brother (R. Lee Ermey ) tries to cover this up and kills the sheriff and takes over the identity of that man.

During all this two brothers name Eric (Matt Bomer) and Dean (Taylor Handley) drive across the country with their girlfriends Chrissie (Jordana Brewster) and Bailey (Diora Baird )as the boys are heading to Vietnam soon. They get involved in an accident which the sheriff appears and brings them back to the classic house. We lots of torture, bear traps, stabbings, shootings, and the first mask of Leatherface, chainsaws, head smashing and some impaling.

Rating: Bring out the blood in this one; this is the film that tries to make sense of what was going on in the remake. Does it work? Yes it kind of does. I still don’t understand why they need to make the family of misfits so large but at the same time it is what it is and the film does work as a prequel. Plus we have Leatherface and Jordana Brewster. Bring out the beers and saws!

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

Country:  USA

Director:  Marcus Nispel

Stars: Jessica Biel, Jonathan Tucker, Andrew Bryniarski, Erica Leerhsen, R.Lee Ermey, Terrence Evans, Heather Kafka, Kathy Lamkin

Storyline: Five friends find themselves stalked by a deformed chainsaw wielding maniac and a inbreed family.

MV5BMjA4OTc0NDEzNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzI1MzAwMQ@@__V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_Review: Welcome to Texas where hitchhikers are horny or just nuts and carry guns in their crotch!

In this remake of the classic from the 1970’s we have a more modern group of dope smoking teens heading to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert . They come across a couple hitchhikers (see above) and before they know it one of them blows off her head and off they become targets for a redneck family. This film tries to stay true to the original with Leatherface (Andrew Bryniarski) wielding his mighty chainsaw and the family tormenting the teens. We have some great scenes of gore such as, heads blown off, brains, body parts, chainsaw murders, cars running over people and lots of blood. The film tries to pay ode to the original and the second film with such scenes of the classic meat hook and the skinning and wear one victims face as a mask.

But to me it tried too hard. It tried to be over the top which the original never really had to do. It relied on gore, blood and guts. The family itself is over populated to the point you almost cannot keep track of them all. The first film kept it simple with a small group this one is like a Rob Zombie film it is all over the place with characters and plot holes.

Rating: First rule of horror don’t fuck with a classic. Sure this remake is semi-decent but if it is not broken do not re-invent the wheel.  The whole cannibal connection is missing from this film. But we do have Jessica Biel in her hotness running around in soaking white top through most of the film. So that counts for something.

Review (Spoils):  Some stupid teenagers crash their car prom night in the deep woods and they try to walk to find help and they one by one get taken by the classic cannibal family. Vilmer (Matthew McConaughey ) is now the leader of the sicko family and the rest of the misfits do not make sense including the classic Leatherface (Robert Jacks) who is now a transgender (sure there was always a bit of hint of it in the past since the second film but this was over the top). The main character Jenny (Renee Zellweger) was not horrible but it was the typical nerd poor me and now I’m beautiful character.  Most of the killing is of screen and the sure there is lots of cattle prodding (Tonie Perensky take’s beating for someone in the family) but the movie fell flat for fright.

Rating:  There is too much weirdness in this film and not in a good way. This is the worse of the worse when it comes to the series and the change to Leatherface just ruins it. The movie becomes downright pointless as you need care about the teenagers to even care out what is actually happening. This is a rare time when I thanked the remake to bring the series back.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (1990)

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 (1990)

Country: USA

Director:  Jeff Burr

Storyline:  A couple run away from a threatening gas attendant and get lost in the back roads of Texas. The Sawyer family are back….

Review (Spoils):  The saw is back and this film is to be a sequel of the first one and ignoring the second one. I disagree as Stretch makes a quick appearance in the beginning so to be this is right after. We have new family members to join Leatherface (R.A Mihailoff ) we have Mama Sawyer, Eddie “Tex” Sawyer (Viggo Mortensen) , Alfredo Sawyer, Tinker Sawyer and last and not least Leatherface’s daughter. Seeing the last movie ended with a bang we have Leatherface with a leg brace. This family is a little different from the other films they use chainsaw yes but they are cleaner and they trap their prey. We learn that have raped their victims (discarding them after child birth) and that’s who the family expands. An example is the little creepy blond girl that is Leatherface’s daughter that reminds me of the girl from The Bad Seed.  Some of the memorable moments are the cowboy ranger boy Tex, Leatherface fighting the spelling toy, the little girl and the sledgehammer scene.

Some of down points of the film is how many version there really is of this film as it has been cut and rated so many times. Another point is Leatherface being called Junior now instead of Bubba like the past films.  I miss the Leatherface that is a confused child in a man’s body character. The film can be hit and miss when it comes to story also.

Rating: We have Viggo Mortensen on film before his big Lord of the Rings series, we have the Sawyer family back and there are worse films in the series than this one. Sure it’s not the greatest but there are worse ones to come. Just wish they would have stuck with the original feel of Leatherface. Remember people “Saw is Family”

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

Review (Spoils): Welcome to Texas where murders with chainsaws have been happening for 14 years and the police cannot nail it down (remind me not to move there). We have mouthy DJ Stretch Brock (Caroline Williams) who over hears two murders while they were on their car phone talking to her on the air. She gets dragged into the situation and the Sawyer family go to pay her a visit at the station. Around the same time we former Marshall Lefty Enright (Dennis Hopper) who straps on his own chainsaw and cowboy hat and goes on a hunt for his nephew Franklin (yes the same one from the first movie).

This movie has chainsaws, gore, blood, music and the classic Sawyer family such as Leatherface (Bill Johnson), the Cook (Jim Seidow) ,Nibbles (the rotting body of the hitcher hiker from the first movie), Grandpa and now Chop Top(Bill Moseley) a war vet with a metal plate in his head.Chop Top adds a new flavor to the family which was missing since the loss of the hitchhiker.  We have a wild ride underground where the family has been hiding out riddled in bones and even the great alter of Grandma. We have the skinning of someone’s face and placed on poor Stretch to wear (yes it was original done here before Rob Zombie did it).

Rating:  I liked this film a lot. Yes it was not as classic as the first one but it was nice entry to the series (unfortunately it goes downhill after this one).  Yes it can get a little far out to left field and Lefty character is a bit much but overall this film is a pleasant slaughterfest.  Grab some cold beers for this one and “Burn them like a Rat!”.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Country: USA

Director: Tobe Hooper

Main Stars: Gunnar Hanson, Marilyn Burns, Paul A.Partain, Teri McMinn, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow

Storyline: A group teenagers head up to visit their grandfather’s grave and old house. Along the way they pick up a hitch-hiker near a slaughterhouse that belongs to a strange family of cannibals, bringing the young teenagers on a night of chainsaws and terror.

Review:The film which you are about to see is an account of the tragedy which befell a group of five youths, in particular Sally Hardesty and her invalid brother, Franklin. It is all the more tragic in that they were young. But, had they lived very, very long lives, they could not have expected nor would they have wished to see as much of the mad and macabre as they were to see that day. For them an idyllic summer afternoon drive became a nightmare. The events of that day were to lead to the discovery of one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”

Right from the Narrative’s opening (see above) to the strange sounds of camera shots of the dismembered rotting bodies this film has welcomed to you to a whole new strange world.  This is a staple must see for horror movie lovers period. This movie proves it does not need gore, blood splatter, naked scenes or known movie stars to make this work. Tobe Hooper took darkness, sounds and imagery to make this one of the most disturbing horror movie of all time. Strange and memorable family members such as the hitch-hiker, the cook, grandpa and of course Leatherface started this franchise and are still the best cast together from the series.

Sure some of the teenage characters can be annoying such as the wheelchair brother Franklin (Paul A.Partain) but his sister Sally (Marilyn Burns) represents some of the best screams from a queen and psycho drama ever performed on the horror screen, as she is being chased by Leatherface (with his wielding chainsaw) and tortured at the dinner table by his insane family.

Leatherface (Gunnar Hanson) has the most memorable moments in this film playing the troubled son. Some of his most haunting scenes are the meat hook hanging of the beautiful Pam (Teri McMinn) while he dismembers her boyfriend. The classic sledge hammer to head by luring his victim to the back door with sounds of a pig. But the most memorable is when the director reflects closely on Leatherface’s face when he is troubled by the acts of brutality that he has performed. It makes you wonder what really is going on behind that mask of dead skin.

Rating: The movie is not hard for me to rate as it is dark and disturbing all in one. To me this is a work of art for the horror genre. One of the first I have ever seen and still one of the best. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a damn good drinking movie (have a drink every time someone says Sally for fun!)
