The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

Country: USA

Director:  David Gordon Green

Main Stars:  Leslie Odom Jr., Tracey Graves, Lidya Jewett, Danny McCarthy, Ann Dowd, Olivia O’Neill, Norah Murphy, Jennifer Nettles, Elle Burstyn, Linda Blair

Storyline:  Two young girls start to play with things they do not understand to talk to one of their deceased moms which leads to the young girls going missing and found possessed.

Review (Spoils):  We flash back into a storyline around the big earthquake in Haiti and it brings us to present day. The storyline around the two girls works and off they go to play with the occult alone in the woods. They never to return until found many miles away and have forgotten everything. The film up to this point is working even when they start to show exact signs of Regan back in her famous hay day. The single father to help his daughter decides hey why not go find Regan’s mom and have her shoe the demon away cause it makes sense and everything including the story goes to shit…

The make up of the demon girls is actually not bad, we have shaking beds, green puke, cursing girls with crucifixes, peeing, bleeding, scratch marks, sore feet, nasty eye gouges, a couple jumps but not enough to make the cheesy demon smoke and lack of actual deaths to save the film.

Rating:  Was not sure what to expect from this movie as the series has been very hit and miss since the first film. Was kind of excited of the nod to the first film with characters return but got left disappointed. This film started off strong and went 100% sideways with the introduction of the mother from the first film. What in the fuck would she try to be the hero, she is not tied the religious systems what the hell was she going to do? Totally dumb scenes and this just blew the storyline into wow this dumb.  This film was bad enough with the copycat idea of the first film they did not need to worth it out the window with the Elle Burstyn character trying to be a hero. Christ she could not save her own daughter Regan what the hell was she going to do with these two girls. Just fucking dumb! First hour was interesting and then it just went flush!

Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary (2018)

Country: USA

Director:  Ari Aster

Main Stars:  Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, Mallory Bechtel

Storyline:  A grieving family after the grandmother passes away starts to have strange occurrences happening to them.

Review (Spoils): As Annie’s (Toni Collette) mother passed away herself and the rest of the family start to have strange things happen to them and odd tragic events. Her husband (Gabriel Byrne) in denial as her son Peter (Alex Wolff) struggles to fit and goes into blank outs, her daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) struggles period and is odd. As trying to figure this all out they start to play with the supernatural and see connection somehow to the grandmother.

This film relies mostly on the tension of the family members. From many tragic losses and then gripping with the strangeness that is haunting the family not just at home but even in the outside world. You can feel the tension between the mother, the father and the son which escalates as more tragic events surround the family and breaks the mothers mind down. When Annie meets Joan, things start to peel open and things of the supernatural are experienced even more.

We get a mix of things within the movie besides the awesome music scores such as beheadings, headless bodies, burnings, a few bodies crawling on walls and ceilings (done very well like Exorcist III), some blood and gore, nasty head banging and naked standing bloated bodies. The film grips on haunting and jump scares and like I mentioned before family tension.

Rating:  I personally can say I enjoyed this film a lot. Sure, some of the images is nothing new that we have not seen before but the tension alone within the family is the horror of the film. You can feel the stress and the struggle and can relate and for that this film was done very well. Sure, when the film starts unfolding the secret there really is no surprises and you may even groan but the film was still worth it. Both Toni Collette and Alex Wolff stand out the most and did an amazing job on the character development. Go checkout this film and All Hail Paimon!
