The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

Country: USA

Director:  David Gordon Green

Main Stars:  Leslie Odom Jr., Tracey Graves, Lidya Jewett, Danny McCarthy, Ann Dowd, Olivia O’Neill, Norah Murphy, Jennifer Nettles, Elle Burstyn, Linda Blair

Storyline:  Two young girls start to play with things they do not understand to talk to one of their deceased moms which leads to the young girls going missing and found possessed.

Review (Spoils):  We flash back into a storyline around the big earthquake in Haiti and it brings us to present day. The storyline around the two girls works and off they go to play with the occult alone in the woods. They never to return until found many miles away and have forgotten everything. The film up to this point is working even when they start to show exact signs of Regan back in her famous hay day. The single father to help his daughter decides hey why not go find Regan’s mom and have her shoe the demon away cause it makes sense and everything including the story goes to shit…

The make up of the demon girls is actually not bad, we have shaking beds, green puke, cursing girls with crucifixes, peeing, bleeding, scratch marks, sore feet, nasty eye gouges, a couple jumps but not enough to make the cheesy demon smoke and lack of actual deaths to save the film.

Rating:  Was not sure what to expect from this movie as the series has been very hit and miss since the first film. Was kind of excited of the nod to the first film with characters return but got left disappointed. This film started off strong and went 100% sideways with the introduction of the mother from the first film. What in the fuck would she try to be the hero, she is not tied the religious systems what the hell was she going to do? Totally dumb scenes and this just blew the storyline into wow this dumb.  This film was bad enough with the copycat idea of the first film they did not need to worth it out the window with the Elle Burstyn character trying to be a hero. Christ she could not save her own daughter Regan what the hell was she going to do with these two girls. Just fucking dumb! First hour was interesting and then it just went flush!

Summer of Fear (1978)

Summer of Fear (1978)

Country: USA

Director: Wes Craven

Main Stars: Linda Blair, Lee Purcell, Jeremy Slate

Storyline: A young girl’s cousin comes to her house for the summer and she suspects her of being a witch.

MV5BMTY2MTU5NDQxOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjU3MDUxMQ@@__V1_SY317_CR2,0,214,317_AL_Review (Spoils): Also known as “A Stranger in Our House” this film deals with a young Rachel (Linda Blair) who is having a hard time dealing with her cousin moving in with her family. The cousin, Julia (Lee Purcell), who has nowhere to go after her parents were killed in a car crash, is trying to fit in. Through time Rachel starts to suspect that there is more to Julia then she claims. She uses spells to enchant people to like her and pull away from Rachel (including her own boyfriend). Rachel tries everything in her own power to reveal the black magic of Julia leading to the final confrontation.

The special effects are a little lame but then again it is a made for TV film. You might be overcome by the hair of Linda Blair as it might be scary then the witch itself. Lee Purcell does a great job playing the villain and she made it believable even with the cheesy effects. Too me, the ending was one of the horror scenes that have stuck in my mind since I was a kid watching it for the first time.

Rating: Don’t expect a ton of scares but think of this as a made for TV thriller that has witches, black magic, jealously, crazy eyes and the classic darkroom scene. It is worth checking out if you haven’t as this film is underrated for an ok 80s flick.

Review (spoils): Dr. Gene Tuskin (Lousie Fletcher) works with troubled children and he becomes interested in Regan (Linda Blair)and her bad dreams and lost memories from when she was possessed. During this Father Lamont (Richard Burton) is sent to investigate the death of Father Merrin. This leads him to Africa where he learns that Father Merrin has done this before and he learns the connection between the evil of humans and locusts how they are common in destruction theory.

This film is all over the place and it is involves some flashbacks and some very bad visuals of ghost like faces of the demon known as Pazuzu. The film does not come even close to the original and for that it hurts the eyes to watch. The acting is not very good and the storyline is boring and flawed. The whole ritual bit in the film is dumb and it loses the terror that was presented in the first film. Locusts, Pazuzu and the stupid Africa ritual just destroyed this series.

Rating: Skip this one do not even try to comprehend this piece of junk. John Boorman shame on you for ruining a great series thank god the third film brings it back to basics and none of the scientific crap.

The Exorcist (1973)

The Exorcist (1973)

Country: USA

Director:  William Friedkin

Main Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Max Von Sydow, Linda Blair, Jason Miller

Storyline: An actress notices a change in her 12 year old daughter’s behaviour, at the same time a young priest doubts faith due to realization of his terminal sick mother. The two storylines combine into a path of straight demonic evil.

Review:  Seen as one of the “scariest movies of all time” I can agree if you’re a first watcher of this film it can be one HELL of a ride. (By the way where the hell have you been if you have never seen this movie?) This film flips back and forth through the storylines of the young child becoming possessed, young priest fighting his faith and an investigation of a mysterious death.

The mother Chris Macneil (Ellen Burstyn) expresses her emotional fight between the battle of her movie career and the darkness that is over coming her daughter’s thoughts to a point where you can place yourself in her situation.  Father Damien Karras (Jason Miller) is the same as you feel the guilty that he is fighting with himself over leaving his ill mother alone during her dying days.

The most memorable moments and visually known is the actual possession of the young child Regan (Linda Blair). From peeing on the floor, pale eyes, cursing profanity, head spinning, puking pea soup, spider crawling on the stairs, masturbating violently with a cross and rising from the bed. Great times all around and the effects are awesome. If you have surround sound crank it up and crack open a few cold ones and enjoy one of the most eerie movies of all time.  And remember “Your mother sucks cocks in Hell”, now I’m in the mood for some Wednesday 13!

Rating: You cannot go wrong with this film and it is one of the most classic horror films of all time. Every horror fan must have a copy of the uncut version of this! So throw on the The Exorcist and drink till you puke green pea soup!
